I use Taiyo Yuden
Very reliable - I don't use CD RW's

TY's are not cheap (in comparison) plus I by the ones you can inkjet print onto

At the level I am working at the price is pretty immaterial as I think CDr's is a very cheap medium generally

+1 on TYs. The best (probably).

At a more affordable and more widely available level, I've found Verbatim ink-jet printables to be good. And for archiving, look specifically for "archive quality" CDs.

After losing data on CD-RWs, I couldn't read them always in different PCs, I never touch them now.

Just my 2d worth.

Another vote for Taiyo Yuden here, in particular anything that goes to a client and all the masters are written on them (and then error checked).

Another long term Taiyo Yuden user here. They're about the only manufacturer that consistently produces good discs. There are certain Verbatim discs that are good but they also produce really bad discs too. The same goes for Mitsui/MAM-A/MAM-E or whatever they are calling themselves nowadays.

I can't think of any other brands that are even worth thinking about - most CD media is produced down to a price nowadays.

Cheers

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought that Taiyo Yuden wasn't a brand but a type of ink used on blank media.

Taiyo Yuden dye is used by other brands.

So you don't have to pay full whack if you don't want to, Verbatim for example use TY dye for some of their DVDr's.

www.svp.co.uk is a place which specifies whether TY dye is used or not.

Another Taiyo Yuden user. (I'm detecting a pattern here...)

They're a bit more expensive, but in the grand scheme of things what's a few extra pence to have a reliable high quality media?

No Taiyo Yuden make their own discs as well as sell their dye to other manufacturers. These other manufacturers have tried to say that their discs are as good as Taiyo Yuden's but in my experience they're not as good.

Make sure that you only buy geniune Taiyo Yuden discs from a reputable seller. Some sellers try to pass off cheap discs that use Taiyo Yuden's dye as Taiyo Yuden discs - avoid them.

SVP changed hands last year and reports I've heard say that they aren't what they used to be. I've certainly changed supplier since the change in management.

Unfortunately most of those brands also sell really bad discs with very similar packaging so, unless the vendor is prepared to guarantee that the discs are made by Taiyo Yuden, I'd avoid them all and go for the real thing.

How does one go about getting these Taiyo Yuden discs in the UK then? I've had a sweep of the Internets and they have come up with a useless website in France that points to JVC optical media.

What about HHB? They are meant for critical Audio and data recording applications.

A quick search around the forum would indicate that they are no longer held in the esteem they once were.

Taiyo Yuden dye is used by other brands.

Taiyo Yuden invented the CD-R.

Some other brands use Taiyo Yuden dye.

But the best CD-Rs (and DVDs etc.) are the ones made by Taiyo Yuden themselves - no contest - I would not use anything else.

Like Aural Reject, I've gone to CVB for my most recent discs which seem to be better than the ones SVP sold (but TY inkjet printables are known to vary a little from batch to batch).

Most reputable specialist recording media suppliers should sell Taiyo Yuden.

HHB don't make their own discs. In the past they rebranded Mitsui discs, which was a good decision when they started doing this but not so good more recently as Mitui/MAM-A/MAM-E discs have been very variable in the last few years. Accelerated ageing tests show that the expensive Mitsui discs should last a long time but my personal experience says they don't. I used to use Mitsui discs regularly but I've had quite a few Mitsui discs go bad on me after a few years so now I wouldn't trust any media based on rebranded Mitsui discs.

There are several Taiyo Yuden printable ones on this page, I must admit I never buy ones which are stamped with a brand as you can't print on them.

Verbatim seem to be the best source of dual layer DVD recordables. I've not had any problems with the few Verbatim DVD+R DL's that I've used.
