PSI monitors

Post by Arksun »

Anyone here had a chance to auditon PSI studio monitors?.

Still a relatively unknown brand, but I've heard claims that they almost equal ATC sound quality at a cheaper price point.

Hugh recently reviewed their A17M and A21M models — you'll be able to read about them in the July issue of SOS.

Cheers!

I have a feeling it'll be a glowing review. Good friend of mine auditioned the A17-M in Holland and was completely blown away. Like me they're a Dynaudio fan and she said this blew Dynaudio out the water. Way more focused and detail, heard things she never heard before in recordings.

Some fascinating technology in the PSI too, Compensated Phase Response system to ensure completely in-phase sound across the entire freq range, Adaptive Impedance.

I noticed the crossover is quite high for a 2-way @ 3.6khz but the crossover slope wasn't listed in the product spec. So I emailed PSI asking what order filter they use and they told me it isn't fixed. It's constantly adapted in realtime to best fit the signal. Clever stuff.

*update*

Auditioned the A14M, A17M and A21M yesterday for 3 hours. Overall was very impressed. They managed to make PMC sound small, boxy and compressed by comparison.

Probably the most solid soundstage I have ever heard.

They aren't cheap. But they are priced to compare favourably with the likes of ATC and the high end PMCs which are their natural peers.

The PSI designs are very impressive and I almost gushed about them in the review -- that's how good they are. ;)

My July SOS popped through the letter box 10 minutes ago. :bouncy:

Hugh reviewed the A17M (£2,599) and the A21M (£4,169) and gave them an excellent review.

His only negative in the CONS box was "Scarily expensive".

Now I have to sit down and read the review properly, rather than just the conclusions. ;):bouncy:

Just thought i'd add before I took the purchasing plunge today I decided to call PSI up to discuss a few aspects of their monitors. Spoke to guy called Marc who was incredibly charming and very helpful. He told me how every single unit they make (ie not just a test sample or one in every 10) is placed in their anechoic chamber and fully tested at max load and measured to ensure it is within the tolerances of their reference pair before being shipped out.

I like that :)
