Audiomedia 1 Nubus Mac help needed

Post by Dave_Bee »

I have aquired an Audiomedia I (rev B.1) Nubus soundcard for vintage Mac. When I put it into my Mac IIfx the computer starts up and when it comes to read the cards it halts with "buss error" - when I remove the audiomedia card, the computer works as normal.

There seems to be something with the Audiomedia card that causes the computer to throw a wobbly when it reads the card's identity. Does anyone know if I need to set the card's jumpers in a particular way? There are 3 jumpers, 2 near the main CPU chip look likely.

Just for fun, if I remove the card's erprom or cpu chip the computer boots just fine - but of course the Audiomedia is not seen.

Booting with extensions off makes no difference. Clues anyone?

God, the old IIfx.
That was a while ago.
Twin floppy drives, 20meg SCSI HD & a rapid 040 CPU that blitzed the Wintels.
You could even run 6 screens - not bad considering...

It sounds like a clocking error to me.

Have you tried the card in another slot ?
It maybe the slot is faulty ?
Is the slot clean ?
( it does not take much dirt to upset things. )
The IIfx has 6 slots, so plenty of options.

Have you tried it in another Mac ?
( preferably something like an 8100)

Got to be worth a shot before you abandon it.

thanks "scope" for your thoughts - ahem.. 10GB of HD if you please, OK 1 FD fitted. it's still fun, OS 7.5.5 too, runs Cubase 2.5 lovely.
Anyway, yes I've tried the card in different slots, no difference but take your point about sensitivity.
At present I only have 1 nubus Mac running, I have another IIfx in hospital but I suspect that too might show the same error.

Which leads me to your first point about it being a clocking issue. I have read something similar to this elsewhere, the IIfx nubus clock runs at a different speed to the Audiomedia card but not yet figured out what to do about it.

I have read ppl do use this card in the IIfx so it should be possible. There are some jumpers on the Audiomedia card that seem to connect to the CPU/DSP, a working example would be helpful as the possible combinations of trial and error are quite large. JP1, 2 and 4 look likely.

thanks for taking time to respond
