Owen corning 703's equivalent in UK?? Please can someone make sense of this

Post by Kolakube »

Hi,

Been reading up tons on making my own basstraps. Going to go for it.

Seems as the entire internet is designed only for Americans who kindly let the rest of the world use it ( :] ) most guides bang on about how super OC 703 or 705 is.
Of course this isn't available in the UK and I understand Rockwool and Mineral wool are similar.

Thing is I have never even heard of any of the above materials before until today. Im not confident arranging delivery of the wrong item.
It gets further complicated when I realise I need Between 3 and 6 pcf (48-96 kg/m3)

^^^ I mean what the hell is that????

Can someone please just link me to a UK product that will do the job of basstrapping, (not broad band absorption if there is a diff in material) Ideally I want 6" thick material so 2" or 3" also fine as Il just back to back em.)

Grateful of any help/pointers.

Ok after much research I got it.

You need rockwool RW3.

You can buy it from anywhaere that has 'acoustic' or 'studio' in their business title but you will pay triple the price.

Get it here.

Hope this helps others out.

Owens Corning 703 board is 3lbs per cubic foot
Owens Corning 705 board is 6lbs per cubic foot

Mineralwool (aka Rockwool) is manufactured by IIG, Roxul, Fibrex, and Knauf.

If you want an equivalent to 703, you would want mineralwool with a density of 3lbs per cubic foot and 6lbs for 705. Thicknesses should also be the same obviously.

this is not strictly speaking accurate... 703/705 are not directly interchangeable with rockwool of the same density for the same performance... they are different materials , with differing absorption coefficients for a given density.

you need to compare absorption coefficients for specific mounting techniques for assorted materials to find the right match for your requirements.

That sounds suspiciously like an advert Steve, and as you know, they aren’t allowed on the SOS Forums ;)

Steve,

I updated my first post so anyone else from the UK looking to do this can easily translate if they stumble on this thread.

RW3 is what I needed or anyone else and there are countless threads on the web showing me or anyone how to do it.

...but if you want to post away below and show others free of charge it cant harm this thread.

HI Idris

this is not my client, nor a potnetial client, if that is what you mean by your assumptive remark? all i am doing is pointing him in the direction of my suppliers, one of which is the same as yours

no, what you did was suggest they talk to YOU about the price of such things.. inferring that it was YOU getting them a super special price.... as an immense favour....

I merely pointed ...... as i have many times before, to a cheap supplier that any joe bloggs punter can use....

and yes, one of the many suppliers i use. I have trade accounts at several insulation distributors and wholesalers.

there's a fairly signifiant semantic difference. :round1:

Knowledge has no value until you use it.... AND someone pays you for doing so.... ;)

it's sort of like sharing, but it also keeps a roof over your head...

So let just drop it , we arnt doing any good by falling out other what you assumed i meant.

To kinda get back O.T. and then deviate slightly , can anyone recommend a retailer for OC 703/ RW3 in east or S/E Ireland?

Rocksilk RS60 is available from IDL in dublin.

not sure about anything more locally specific...

http://www.insulationdistributors.ie/

it does depend on the quantity you need whether they'll be any use to you...

but they may be able to point you at more local small quantity sources.

hope that helps
