Hammond VST

Post by Hewesy »

Hi Folks,

Can anyone recommend a good Hammond VST please? I'm more after the classic Hammond/Leslie sound, as per say Chris Holland in Jool's Holland's band, early motown etc as apposed to the more heavy/overdriven Deep Purple/70's rock sound.

I'm running Reaper on a fairly decent laptop, so looking for something lightweight, happy to try free or spend a little! I'm not a key player, its only for the odd chord stab rather than a lead instrument so not looking on spending a vast amount if possible.

Thanks!

To ask for something good for free or not a lot of money is a big ask.! I've used most (not all) of the VST Hammond plugins and for me personally the best is Native Instruments B4 which also works as a stand alone app.

I believe they discontinued the B4 and replaced it with a set of samples. An odd decision, but there you are.

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

B4 was effectively a set of samples anyway wasnt it, through its own Kontakt Player front end? :?

And IIRC, arent most of the sounds in B4 and its replacement (Vintage Organs) pretty much the same anyway?? Have to admit, not seen too many sample sets/VST's in this particular class, let alone ones that have got near to B4/Vintage Organs... they dont seem to have that much competition.

Has Steve Hollowsun got anything??

Thanks guys, I've seen loads of VST's for various keys, but Hammond's seem to be thin on the ground.

Wasn't sure if it would be a big ask - until I asked!

I have toyed with B4 for ages, then it was discontinued. As I don't use a sampler within my music, unless it comes with or works with a basic/free host/player then I'm a bit stuck with VST.

Obviously if the best solution is B4 or a Hollowsun library then I may need to reconsider the sampler!

Hey, by toyed with B4 do you mean thought about buying it, or bought it and played around with it? Because if you have the samples, the free Kontakt player, can see them and play them just fine - mine does....

GSI VB3

There's a demo version to try for free and it's just €49.00 to buy.

He's a clever bloke and does some really great and affordable stuff. And he has all the originals of the stuff he models so you can be fairly sure it's pretty close.

The SoS review of VB3 was very very favourable, especially on the leslie emulation. Cheap too.

+1 for VB3. I much prefer this to the NI Vintage Organs!!

I like B4 and have used it for many years, but I was recently introduced to GSI VB3 and my head has been turned. Now I vaccillate between the two - each have their merits for specific mixes. VB3 has a bit more mid-lo grunt and doesn't sound so fizzy when pushed into distortion.

Fantastic, thanks for the links Hollowsun. Though I have long been tempted with your Moog Taurus samples so a sample player could be on the horizon...

Toyed as in thought about, sadly not invested otherwise the free player would be ideal.

Check out UVI Retro Organs. Based on the old "Charley" sample set. Requires an iLok but really does sound good. They often have cut price offers on their website.

Their blurb.......
This gorgeous 3 Gb sample library concentrates on the most famous electric organ of all times, recorded with audiophile gear in one of the best studios in the world.

The rotating speaker, the tonewheels, and the grit of an organ sound played through a guitar amp... all these classic elements contribute to the final sound, and they are faithfully reproduced by this UVI Soundcard™.The sound categories include presets with and without rotating speaker cabinet, vibrato and percussion. The organ is also presented played through the regular speaker, guitar amps and D.I. boxes. To round off the extensive sound selection, pedal sounds are also included.

Totally agree, I invested in VB3 about a year ago. Sweet sound. B4 was good too, but I prefer VB3 overall.

I have B4II and several other Hammond-alikes.
Giulio's stuff IS excellent, but since B4II is currently working away just fine under win7-64 I am happy to stay with it and use Hollow Suns Vox-alike for the rest.

Will invest in the full version.
