Hello!
I'm going to record two violin and one cello in a small church tomorrow. I do want to capture a bit of the church acoustics, but not all of it.
I'm going to record all 3 the instruments together at the same time.
What is a good microphone placement to use? Mic them all seperately or make one setup with a few mics like a ORTF?

Re: Violins and Cello
I'd suggest an ORTF setup with maybe a couple of room omnis.
What mics do you have? Is it a concert or just a recording session?

Re: Violins and Cello
You might consider putting two c451s in an ORTF or XY pattern, the remaining two c451s on the violins, and the 414 on the cello. Ideally you won't need the spot mics, but it can be helpful if you're jammed up after the fact.

Re: Violins and Cello
If the C414s are the B-ULS model I'd use those as the ORTF pair. I find 451s a little bright for strings.
I'm not familiar with the KM-85s, but I'd imagine they would make good spot mics.

The mics I have available:
Neumann KM-85 (2x)
AKG C414 (2x)
AKG C451B (4x)
AKG C5900
Audix C111
Sennheiser MD-421
Shure SM57 (4x)
Shure SM58 (4x)
your kidding - right? - I mean who would have that in the box? I'd go for the Sennheiser. 4 sure
Re: Violins and Cello
The Sennheiser is a dynamic mic, probably not the best mic for a stringed instrument, in my opinion.
I might be wrong.
