Sony DMX R100 on Ebay

Just noticed a couple of Sony DMXs which will probably go pretty cheap tomorrow.

stateside does not equal UK. Akai 950s sell for about £150 here. They fetch up to $1000 in the US. But completely agree about it being overpriced.... esp. as the card isn't included.

Buying into old digital desks is not a good plan generally speaking. Why not use a DAW?

The only sane people who will bid on any digital desk, but especially anything from Sony, will be people who need them for spare parts.

The R100 is still a 'current' digital desk as far as the technology and sound quality goes, and it's analogue stages are substantially better than many digital desks. For anyone that needs a real mixing desk and is happy to work in the digital domain, the R100 -- especially at those kinds of prices -- is something of a bargain.

But, ongoing maintenance would be a total nightmare (as it is for most digital desks, in reality), and if the tactile real-time mix control surface isn't required (and there are few situations these days where it actually is) then working in a DAW (possibly with some external fader packs) would be a much more sensible and cost-effective way forward.

Honestly of all the things I would of thought digital desks to not suffer from is reliability issues.
This is coming from some one who has never owned or used any kind of digital console.. I thought analogues were a big enough pain in the bum to keep running and would sometimes dream of going digital

Some are while some aren't. I just powered up my big A&H Saber desk last night after it had been stored in pieces for over 4 years. So far, everything I have tried is still working as expected apart from one mute switch. Somehow I think the MTR90 might be a different story...

Everything involving electronics will fail at some point. Digital desks are more reliable in some ways than analogue desks -- no more crackly buttons, knobs and faders, for example -- but they often use custom integrated circuits which quickly become obsolete and unmaintainable. Analogue desks tend to use parts which are still commonly available or fairly easily upgradeable.

These old digital desks can make for a nice control surface. I still use a humble Mackie D8B, and even that can pretend it's a HUI.

There's something musically inspiring about motorised faders and coloured twinkling lights. No doubt the new owner will soon be sitting there, watching the sinewave demo work its mechanical magic, and come up with a lovely melody.

The R100 is a damned good mixer and very flexible. I have commisioned several and the only one I had a problem with was one that came back from North Africa as part of an OB refurbishment. Sand was the problem. Faders were intermittent, stuff would happen all by itself, quite spooky really. Anyway, I found a great little company in London that specialises in sorting such things and it was like new when it came back.

I agree. I have 3 original 02R's all still working fine, and while I also agree that all things electronic will fail at some point, that includes everything we use right? so why worry. Enjoy these things while they are working is my philosophy. Also still working for me is a Sony 3348, and an Otari 24 track tape machine.
