IMX stereo expander vs. surround sound

Post by JuddBonus »

Im about to mix my tracks down and sort of happy with the sound.. but the question is I have a IMX stereo expander that sits in a optimus 10 band eq mod 2025 (I dont use the EQ itself except as a real time analyzer during mixing only) and it really adds a "wall of sound" to it., just the IMX filter NOT adding the Eq to it

Ive also seen surround sound components.. I have one, but its not separate and its used in a integrated unit.. a JVC reciever.

To give my tracks a real depth in enhancing them.. which one is better.. the IMX stereo expander or the surround sound.?

If I ripped these tracks using the IMX and then played that same track on another system that has a active IMX filter on it... whatll happen.? Too boomy, distorted, over driven... what.?

If I dont use anything... these tracks are going to be flat, no color, no depth.. but If I enhanced these tracks by using the EQ and other filters on my DAW without using one of these filters and then play it back with the filters I know itll be over driven, boomy and distorted...

Any suggestions.? If anybody picks the surround sound.. please tell me how to hook it up from that receivers point of view or pointing out a cheap excellent single component version on ebay somewhere..

I guess I could cut two versions and label them as 1. artist - title(w/IMX) and 2.atist - title, if I dont have a filter on it.. why write it down.?

Thanks

The IMX is probably just doing the old trick of feeding one channel with inverted polarity into the opposite channel. This is easy to achieve on most decent recording programs but it isn't really a substitute for doing a good mix in the first place.
