phantom power supply and phase invert

Post by Peevy »

Hope someone will help me out. I want to power a pair of small diaphragm condensers. They work really well as a stereo pair when one of them is turned completely out of phase. (don't know why that is!)

I want to use them with the two input adapter (EXH-6) which is an accessory with the Zoom H6 which doesn't supply phantom power unfortunately. So my plan was to acquire a two channel battery or mains operated phantom power supply. My question is:

I have a phase inverter adapter which I can use to reverse the phase on one of the mics, but where would I put it in the chain?

Do I plug the phase changer straight into the microphone, from there take an xlr cable to the phantom power supply and then another cable out from the phantom supply to plug in to the H6 input? Or do I need another phase inverter at the point where the signal leaves the phantom power supply to go into the H6 input?

Thanks

Either one of the mics is internally phase reversed because it's been wired up wrong, or you just like out of phase stereo! ;)

You only need to flip the polarity once, and it doesn't matter where you do it -- either between the mic and phantom supply, or between phantom supply and recorder.

But the fact that you think you need to flp the polarity is quite worrying, and I'd want to check the mics / cables etc.

As said, anywhere is good for the polarity inverter. Once inverted, the signal will stay inverted!

Are you listening on speakers or headphones? Though you may find the effect of out-of-phase stereo appealing, I'd warn against getting too used to it! Others will find it annoying.

You don't have to write songs. The world doesn't want you to write songs. It would probably prefer it if you didn't. So write songs if you want to. Otherwise, please don't bore us with beefing about it. Go fishing instead.

Thanks for the replies.

Long story but: I purchased a stereo pair of Beyerdynamic mc930 mics, but one of them is faulty and due to be sent for repair (excessive hiss on one of them (tried with various cables and preamps)) I had another mc930 and always liked it as a mono mic on small instruments and hence bought the stereo pair.

So, as a stopgap for a little live recording, I thought I'd try the mismatched pair (the two that work) ... but they are out of phase. Tried with various cables, preamps, ears and software phase meter. (and the 'put one as close as on top of one another' test)
So, I think! one of mics must be wired internally the wrong way round. I would think that that's unlikely, but the tests I've done seem to bear that out. Or is there something I'm missing?

I wonder if one of them has been 'repaired' elsewhere and put back together incorrectly.

If you intend using them as a stereo pair, it might be worth sending both back to Beyer together to have them checked as a pair.

Hi Hugh and Exalted Wombat

Yes, I'm fairly sure now that the original mc930 (pre stereo pair) has the internal wiring round the wrong way. It was bought new a while back and has never had any work done on it, but I wouldn't have noticed anything amiss as it was always just used on a few occasions as a mono mic.

The actual stereo pair are being sent back anyway, so I might just get them to check the other one while they're at it.

Thanks for answering my phantom power/phase adapter query.
