please help...i have connected my sta level retro comp to my daw and have it up and running great on any audio channel insert.When i use it as an insert on any vst instrument track.. it only compresses one side of the signal...but works fine on audio...any ideas would be greatly appreciated...drivin me mad.

It's a single channel compressor. It can't be used to compress stereo sources unless they are first summed to mono.

How do i sum it to mono on vst instruments...do i have to open an insert then use the send to an fx channel..cheers

I'm pretty sure Reaper has a stereo to mono plugin to insert after your stereo instrument, to sum it to mono Alternatively, THIS looks good.
