It is possible to change tempo with MINIMAL effect on the overall sound (Phasevocoding, PSOLA, Granular timestretching etc...). Most DAWs have a general time stretching algorithm built in now for example Logic Pro and Ableton Live. If you want something more advance, what you need to find out is what aspect of the sound you most want to preserve be it pitch, rhythm, tone etcetera... There are many different algorithms available which are better for specific applications.
This may help?

This really depends how fussy you are about sonics...If you're the sort of person who prefers 96k to 48k, who likes to match preamps to microphones, who lines up bits of outboard with tone to make sure they're matched etc etc then time stretchin things might not be for you full stop.
