Recommend a microphone for Sony FDR-AX100 video camera.

Post by ProActive »

Hi there,
The question I have is with the microphone that we want use with the Sony FDR-AX100 video camera.

Background:
I currently do audio / video recording at a spiritual organization in India. For audio recording we use Sony PCM D100 (link below) with built in microphones & also use an external microphone with the same recorder, which is Sony C800GPAC (link below).
We tried many microphones and finalized these because they do capture the voice of the speaker close to the original voice. We only have one speaker and his voice has lot of base in it. We like these microphones very much unless we find others that can capture the voice much closer to the original voice.

Question details:
The question I have is with the microphone that we want use with the Sony FDR-AX100 video camera. We use an external lavaliere microphone but it does not capture the voice as well as we want it to. So we are looking for a better alternative that can record audio as well as the two microphones mentioned above. So please recommend microphones that I can use with this camera (mostly lavaliere or wireless is fine as well) that captures audio close to the original as we found with the above two.

Thank you

The Sony C800GPAC is one EXPENSIVE microphone! and that isn't a cheap camera either. I must get into the religion business!

You don't have to write songs. The world doesn't want you to write songs. It would probably prefer it if you didn't. So write songs if you want to. Otherwise, please don't bore us with beefing about it. Go fishing instead.

Bit of an odd question. The mic positioning is the key to good sound, more than choice of mic, or what camera it's plugged into. An expensive tube mic won't change anything for you because it's far more about HOW you do it that WHAT you do it with.

I get the impression that your location has issues that need to be addressed. There are probably many issues so someone needs to hire a location sound person, or learn about it. Here's a good start.

Sounds like something is wrong with the wireless lavs you've been trying.

Maybe investigate a kit something like this:
Senny G3 camera kit
...assuming that camera has at least a 3.5mm minijack mic input? *

You can always use such kit with a better lav mic, like this:
MKE 2 Gold

I expect John W will be along to give better/more up to date advice soon, I'm sure! :)

Edit: * I just checked: it does have a mic-in socket, but it doesn't even have a shoe for mounting the G3 receiver, necessitating some other sort of on-camera bracket (maybe tripod socket mounted? ugh.)

Actually, if you were prepared to think of spending £11K+ on a mic, perhaps you need a SLIGHTLY better/bigger prosumer camera than that? For example, do you really NEED 4K?? I'd go for "normal" HD and XLR inputs for mics, but that's just IMHO.
