Mastering Engineer Recommendations

Post by Guest »

Anyone recommend an affordable but decent mastering engineer? I'm looking for someone who is interested in doing what's best for the song rather than just pushing up the level through a compressor/limiter and sending it back. Thanks.

I've never heard a less than impressive master from Tom Woodhead to be found here!

I've sent numerous artists i've worked with across many (but mainly guitar heavy) genres. Can't recommend his work highly enough.

I have been using Sage Audio based out of Nashville, TN the past couple of years; they have always done great work on my stuff. Link here.

I've had mixed experiences with Sage. A master they did, was really good and we had great communication with the engineer during the process. As I like to keep working for people who does a good job, I sent them another a few months later. What I got back was horrible, worse than a "put a L1 on an move the threshold". Now these were the times where I had started mixing from not so long, so probably the mix was les then perfect, but what was most upsetting is that I didn't get any feedback - like "look, this mix is not good" or anything else. The result was so obviously not listenable that it felt they'd just put it thru a standard chain and sent it back to me without even checking the results.

I would recommend Eric James, who writes for SOS sometimes.

He's very sensitive to and respectful of the wishes of the artist/producer.

You can also look into some AI-based, cloud mastering services as well.
ARIA is apparently very good - https://ariamastering.com/

What is your music genre?

Not often I get to recommend a fellow islander but Denis Blackham at Skye Mastering (although in semi retirement) is a great and sensitive engineer with a pretty illustrious back catalogue.
