The manual is unclear. Can't find anything with a search of SoS.
So when using the Mod Delay II plugin in ProTools 11. What does it do when you use negative feedback?
What is negative feedback in delay plugin (Mod Delay II)?

I'm not familiar with that specific plugin, but it is a very common feature to include an option for negative feedback around a delay processor.
With very short delays it allows you to achieve stronger, more coloured, delay-based effects, like phasing, flanging etc. And with longer delays it allows tape-echo and other reverb-like effects effects.

Ah yes...
...negative feedback is achieved by adding a polarity inverted portion of the output signal back to the input. This is a stable form of feedback used universally as a correcting signal in amplifiers, and it acts to control the overall gain and cancel out errors in the amplifier itself (ie, it helps to reduce distortion).
In contrast, positive feedback results in howlrounds because the output signal is added to the input signal, effectively increasing the gain.

Re: What is negative feedback in delay plugin (Mod Delay II)?
OK, thanks for the replies guys.
The feedback knob goes from -100% to +100%, so I guess that means that anything on the negative setting has flipped polarity? Hmm, I guess it would be the same if the knob just went from 0 to 100% and there was a button to flip the polarity.
The manual just says:
Feedback (FBK)
The Feedback setting controls the amount of feedback applied from the output of the delay back into its input (from –100% to 100%). It also controls the number of repetitions of the delayed signal. Negative feedback settings give a more intense “tunnellike” sound to flanging effects.

Re: What is negative feedback in delay plugin (Mod Delay II)?
Yes, so this control actually provides both positive (0 to 100) and negative (0 to -100) feedback options.
As they say, more negative feedback ends to give a more intense effect when phasing and flanging. With longer delays it also increases the number and strength of repeats before the signal dies away.
Positive feedback gives a slightly different flavour of colouration with phasing and flanging settings, and high settings can tend towards instability and howlround effects.
As always, the best way to get a handle on what it does it to play with it!
