Media Player alternatives/Codecs Win 10

Post by vinyl_junkie »

I recently upgraded from Win 7 to 10 and I have to say I'm generally quite happy.

W10 feels nice and modern, is quick and has been very stable for me but some things of the past it just can't let go of..

Whilst I'm not using it as a dedicated music computer I get sent audio files by people that are a variety of formats i.e. 24 bit wav, aif etc
Even though the hardware is compatible good ol' Media Player throws a hissy fit and won't play them.. Hell they've even removed the DVD coded in 10, so much so for going forwards!

So I have to put the file on a USB stick and take it over to the other computer where I can play it in Wavelab hahah

Is there a decent trusted codec pack out there for Win 10 64 bit?

I don't like VLC but might have to resort to it if all else fails

Although it doesn't directly answer your question, i like the groove music app for playing audio files directly. It's really fast and feels almost as seemless as preview for OSX. I use vlc for the odd aif i may get.

You could download a CODEC pack from the web but risk getting malware.
But if you install VLC it should install pretty much all you need and other Media Players can then use the same CODECs I think!
I'd try that and if it fails just uninstall it.

Again, not a direct answer, but I've been a fan of XMPlay for general playback duties for the last ten years. Tiny, portable, attractive and flexible interface via skins. I carry it everywhere.

Hope that helps.

Foobar2000 runs fine on W10. Unfussy about playing pretty much anything. ASIO if you want it. Loaded with useful tools for diagnostics, edits metadata, choice of views, colours, visible windows, filing system. A mature player that's clean, Ad free, bug free & free.

Why do bad things mostly seem to happen to people who light up a room when they enter it?

VLC plays everything short of a beer mat. That's puts it #1 in my book.

I'm another enthusiastic user of foobar2000 for audio media files, using ASIO drivers (to ensure no bit-twiddling goes on behind the scenes).

With suitable add-ons, it also plays all my ancient computer game music tracks written for formats such as Sega Megadrive, Nintendo Gameboy, and even has a good stab at realising General MIDI scores!

Highly recommended
