Mixer outputs into one single speaker?

Post by Heading West »

Thinking of doing some busking. Have already got a little mixer and need to get an active cab. My question is:
Can you send the main stereo outputs from a mixer into one cab with two-way inputs?
I realise this would be mono in any case but having a stage piano + other peripherals means one speaker would be the limit! Is there any reason to worry that one speaker would be doing too much? Any advice appreciated.

As you say it would result in mono anyway so just don't pan any of your channels and then just plug either the left or the right output from the small desk into the speaker.

No need to run two cables into the speaker cab.

+1 what he said. Pan everything to the middle on the mixer, and just use one of the main outputs to feed the speaker.

Thank you. So on that basis I wouldn’t need to get a ‘two way’ cab?

No, it shouldn’t be a factor in which to buy. But I think most have more than one input anyhow.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

BTW, my wife has a Behringer Europort MPA40BT which she uses for outdoor weddings with her harp, and it works very well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was going to do another post on this but since you brought it up.......apart from the behringer can anyone recommend a 15 inch active cab for busking. It’s going to be secondhand - nothing new for busking! I’m thinking 15 inch because it’s a piano and vocal and I want a bit of clout in the bass area. Also as lightweight as poss. Alto’s new ts215 is 32lbs for instance although I’ll have to wait a time before these appear on the secondhand market. Thoughts anyone?

Usual advice here is that 12" usually give better vocal clarity than 15".

Certainly a 12" in anything half-decent should see you fine.

I have Alto TS210s and am usually winding bass out of those to ensure clarity... but still get plenty of 'clout'... :)

.....and the obvious question to ask is "will you have access to power whilst busking?"

That’s useful Mike. Yes I know that 12 inchers are better for vocals but assumed that a 15 inch would address the voice ‘and’ be better for left hand keys given that’s it’s outside? But I’ll think on your advice - no doubt my back would be in agreement with you as well!

Yes Bob - considering one of those PSW power inverters with a deep cycle battery. Hmm, I’d better get some income from this.
