Well, there's no putting it off anymore, I've spent too long reading all the synth articles in SoS and hoping that one day they'd make sense; it's time to read all 63 episodes of Synth Secrets.

I am soon going to be doing the same thing. My plan is to download them as PDFs on my iPad so I can have them on a separate screen with a soft synth on the computer.

Yep, I'm going to need to get hands on with something fairly soon. I'm currently having my mind blown by the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of chapter three.

You can't just *read* them - you need to practically implement all the examples on an appropriate synth, too, to get the most out of it...

That's precisely why I decided to get the PDFs on one device and keep my computer free for appropriate VST instruments. I'm old enough to realise how fortunate we are to so many excellent software implementations of classic hardware, often for peanuts or free.

Syntorials a pretty good way to learn synthesis

When I tried it out I just did the free Tutorials(tight!! ) to get me started. Might be a way
to cover off the initial basics and a partner for the Synth Secrets. Help the initial steps make
more sense.

Comes with a Soft synth to do the lessons on and runs on Mac, windows, ipad etc

Going to finally fish my old DJX out of the garage but my default soft synth (Xpand2) has a basics section that allows you start with a simple wave and then play around with the ADSR options as well. There's another thread on the go at the moment with some other recommendations as well so i'll be having a play to find something appropriate and fun.

The DJX isn't a great place to learn synthesis on. Basically a Rompler with a filter. No adjustable oscillators (or envelopes IIRC).

I know I'm very much in a minority with my synth of choice, but I wonder if it is worth trying to put together some form of guide (I hesitate to suggest 'tutorial') on ways it's synth engines can be manipulated - completely ignoring the supplied sound patches.

Would there be enough people interested in firing up a Linux box to run it?

I have to confess there is still a huge amount I don't understand myself - but then I've only be using it for about 20 years

I'm afraid I can't do video, simply because I not only don't have the equipment, but also have zero experience. I also have a finite amount of time for everything I want to do!

It's not really a 'synth' as the good rodent has explained, although it does have some very rudimentary filter controls. But...

..it's great as a controller keyboard for any softsynths you may use as you learn. Despite the manual saying to the contrary (and rumours at the time suggest it was a mistake that slipped past Yamaha QA!) the DJX outputs MIDI controller information from its control knobs - a feature that it was suggested Yammy wanted to keep for costlier incarnations of that technology of the time. Their mistake was our gain.

Sure it's been overtaken long ago, and it only has a small handful of useful knobs, but that was a big deal back then, and it remains a neat feature now.

My DJX is still my 'go anywhere' keyboard when I need to travel light, for composing sessions and the like. It's cheesy, but it's still a damned useful bit of kit. Get the poor thing out of the garage and give it some love!

I did the Syntorial course and it's very good! I like the way it's laid out with quizzes and the in-app soft synth makes it a breeze to test/apply what you are learning.
