How to do spy guitar ?

Post by Gone To Lunch »

I am doing a track that needs some spy guitar.

I am not a guitar player and I am using the guitar VIs in MOTU MachFive3 in my Digital Performer 9, Les Paul & Strat. The DP is well supplied with FX pedals, inc tremolo and spring reverb

Advice thus far has been slow tremolo and spring reverb. (Also Hawaiin shirts and amphetamines.)

What I want to know is what is the best sequence for the plugins - tremolo or spring reverb first, on should the spring be on an aux bus ?

thank

If it was a guitarist playing period kit it would be trem then reverb, either built into an old Fender style amp or using a trem pedal into the amp. (if really lucky maybe an old Fender spring reverb tank between the amp and speaker).

Guitar wise the Strat might be your best bet as no doubt you want to use the whammy for authentic warbles and dips, use the neck pickup and start with the tone fully rolled off then adjust to suit.

Of course if your LP has a Bigsby then that's perfect :-)

Do you mean surf style? Peter Gunn? As of a real guitar, it's mostly the playing technique. Lots of attack pick sound, so you need to play the bridge pickup, mute the strings to get the bouncy feel, precise fretting and good timing, Wash it all with reverb and a little vibrato. Clean amp, must respond fast, so I'd go more towards a VOX than a Fender. Play with the bridge tone control to get the right timbre. Can be done with any guitar, but a strat, a tele or a hollowbody with P90s will do out of the box..

With virtual instruments, I would try to find a base sound with these characteristics (bridgey so more highs, palm-muted and short decay), a clean snappy amp emulation and then yes , vibrato (like in VOX vibrato, so tremolo) and reverb. No idea if it's possible, the easiest would be to ask a good guitarist friend.. :)

I recently found out that the old fender amps actually went reverb into trem. Not sure what era exactly but I’d guess that surf was pretty prominent.

Definitely get the spring reverb going though!

Vic Flick played the James Bond guitar.

Not sure that tremolo was a major part of the sound, but I'm sure it's been used on some sound-alikes.

Q) Can someone please tell me how to go about getting that guitar sound?

A)

1 Fender Jaguar
1 Fender Twin Reverb amp
1 Hawaiian shirt
1 Surf board
A pinch of amphetamine

So far we've got:
Use a fender or a gibson as long as it has a whammy bar.
Use the neck or the bridge pick-up.
Use a fender or a Vox amp.
Tremolo into verb or verb into tremolo...

Guitarists are a funny bunch ;)

And of course you absolutely must use a valve U47, a vintage Neve desk and 4-track tape. ;)

Of course you'll need a Strat, but not any old Strat.

Now pay attention. This may look like a normal Fender Stratocaster but flick the pickup selector to position 4, like so, and you have semi automatic machine pistol. Fires standard 7.62mm rounds at a rate of 45 rounds per minute.

The pull switch on the neck tone control activates a tracking beacon and the low E string can be used as a garrotte.

Now you'll need a disguise. Here's a false beard and dark glasses. You may be surprised to know that we've had six different agents using the cover identity of Billy Gibbons in the last five years alone.

Ahah good point. Thing is, it's a clean guitar into a clean amp - almost any guitar and amp can do, as what matters most is the technique. Heck, you can play Peter Gunn convincingly on a nylon string..

Could I suggest a Martin acoustic?

00-15 perhaps? Licenced to kill.

There is a profound African saying, "A white man who cannot dance is a victimless crime, whereas a white man with a djembe drum ..."

Big Heavy strings especially at the bottom end, clean precise picking technique.

Add a touch of valve drive (just a bit of warmth) and reverb to taste.
