Some good options here. Consider also the rugged and portable Sound Devices MixPre-10M:
- records 8 discrete mic/line XLR or1/4" inputs simultaneously to SD card
- creates a USB thumbdrive copy on the fly
- built in mixer for live mixing of the 8 inputs
- remix (adjust individual levels, pans, reverbs etc) the 8 tracks after the fact.
- can overdub for layering more tracks ... up to 12-tracks and if you need more you can bounce.
- Built in high quality reverbs and vocal air algorithm
- Also acts as a 12-in / 4 -out USB audio interface and you can do this at the same time as recording internally on the box.
- Can be controlled via USB Midi Controllers like Korg NanoKontrol Studio, Novation LaunchKontrol XL
- Basically everything you need in a very small package without having to lug a computer around.

For some reason, Paul's posting signature -- which declares his role at Sound Devices -- has failed to appear in this thread! So while I completely agree with, and personally endorse the suggestion of, the Sound Devices MixPre10M for all the reasons Paul states, I feel duty-bound to point out that Paul is, in fact, one of the leading lights at Sound Devices... Just for absolute clarity and the avoidance of doubt as to why he has mentioned that specific machine. 8-)

Carry on...

It's not showing on any of his posts, so Paul may have unintentionally deselected showing his signature (maybe he had a cookie clear-out?).

Thanks -- I reported the problem and Ian G has been looking into it in the back-office admin system this morning and tinkering... so his great works may have brought it back. But glad that it's now working properly again! :D
