A big thank you and shoutout to Max, the Studio Support Gnome

Post by Eddy Deegan »

I sent out a request for input on ideas for improving my acoustic environment (a first for me) a while ago, and got some great input as is usual.

One of the main takeaways from the exercise, which should have been obvious really, was that I needed professional help. People have been telling me that for years in many contexts but on this occasion I did exactly that and thus this morning I was gratified to hear Max roll up in his chariot bearing solutions and knowledge.

I had been told (not only by forumites but by Max himself) to prepare for pain, truth and tears. I had mentally prepared myself and I am happy to say tears were not involved. Truth and pain however ...

In all seriousness, after a day of equal mixtures of socialising and hardcore information transfer I am beyond impressed with the result of today's activities.

A plan has been formulated, expectations as to the things that can be achieved have been set (and they exceeeded my previous expectations by some margin), understanding has been imparted, tea (so, so much tea!) has been consumed and budgets have been established.

Turns out my little black hole of doom doesn't have to be a) so black, and b) so doomful.

I am now equipped with diagrams, a parts list and most importantly a plan. Well, he hasn't sent the parts list yet but it's known at a high level on my part and pending ;-)

There comes a point in any musician's life when if they want to 'level up' they stop thinking about gear and start thinking about environment. After a day in the University of Gnome, I now appreciate more than ever how good an idea it was to do exactly that.

Thank you Max and I am very excited about what's going to be happening in the short-medium term future with regards to my space

I will be following up with progress reports in due course, but whereas there are things I'm doing to prepare beforehand, there will be a little delay in anything pictorial of note as in the meantime I am having the entire house rewired, which means that the studio part of things will commence nearer the end of the year but come it will.

It's going to be looking ... different. More purple, anyway.

Technical Editor, Sound On Sound...
(But generally posting my own personal views and not necessarily those of SOS, the company or the magazine!)
In my world, things get less strange when I read the manual...

It's amazing what not working as self-employed in the music business and actually getting paid can do to a person.

That and Eddy's amazing photoshop skills! ;)

My thanks to Mr Desiato for the kind words....

we will drag this boy kicking and whimpering into the 21st century ,

and already the process begins..... I will turn one of his SY85 into a TG500 as if by Magic.

doubling his polyphony, and vastly reducing the studio real estate required .....

ok, that is STILL 20th century tech.... but there will be much more magic performed in the name of rational studio design and acoustics

Mostly Retired from Audio.... If I already know you I'll help,  if not....    Ask Hugh Robjohns, unless that is you're in need of 80's shred guitar... that, I'm still interested in having fun with...

Music to my ears. Though I do need to confess that I'm not turning any of my SY85s into a TG500, I'm turning an SY77 into a TG500, thus losing some keyboard real-estate but adding a couple of SY85 worth's of polyphony to the 3 I already have ;-)

What I will say is that unless I'm actually using them, the physical SY85s will be standing on end in the "stuff you don't need to hand all the time right now" section of the room reserved for that purpose, along with a number of other boards that currently are taking up real estate they don't need to.

To prove I'm serious, the section of the room mentioned above doesn't fully exist right now. I'll be knocking down a bit of plasterboard-work to complete it before the re-wiring though!

Mrs. D. is happy if only because she will no longer have to share bedroom space with the Korg M3, living room space with an S90 and ... well, you get the idea.

At the risk of sounding a bit cheesy, I am thrilled to be taking on this project and consider myself lucky to be surrounded by so many people I trust, with so much expertise. I shudder to think how I could even have approached this endeavour in the absence of the SOS forums.

Although I have to wait for the house rewiring to be done (current ETA is roughly late October) before getting really stuck into this in a practical sense, there will be ongoing information exchanges with Max and suppliers and I have some decluttering in process right now.

As for the next steps, the budget is there, the plan is there and the support is there. I could not be happier with the way things are going in the music department and I will be posting further updates on the transformation once the interesting work commences in earnest.

I'm turning an SY77 into a TG500

Pedant alert...
Do you mean you are turning an SY77 into a TG77? If so, how so? Major surgery?

Hehe, no ... we've set up an exchange of one for the other, as I don't use the SY77 in practice.

I find the Arturia DX-7V and the Mod-7 engine in the Korg Kronos both more than enough for that kind of thing and a lot more convenient in terms of connectivity etc.

Whereas I agree with you in my heart, Max doesn't mess about and does a special line in home truths ... it's all part of a much bigger plan :-)
