How to spot a fake SM58

Post by Drew Stephenson »

This just popped into my inbox courtesy of studiospares and given all the dodgy ones doing the rounds I thought it might be useful:

But you can't tell that from eBay pictures, or the weight or the sound. So just don't buy used 57s and 58s from eBay (or similar).

... or new ones (and quite a few of the Sennheiser range :( ) at prices that are too good to be true.

EBay also has some text and narrative about how to spot a dodgy 58.

That's usually the tell tale sign. If it's too good to be true .....

Two thoughts... 'some years back'... It's only in the last few years that mic (and other tech) faking has really got going as an industry in its own right.

Not everyone on EBay is a crook! I'm often selling there m'self, so it must be true! I've bought some excellent and genuine stuff there from honest people who have gone out of their way to address problems.

However the number of crooks was increasing all the time, whilst the number of genuine sellers was decreasing. I found I was normally reporting one scam auction a day, sometimes two, and as a result, stopped using it.

Fakes were already a major issue when I bought this mic. What convinced me to take a chance was that it had the 40th anniversary logo on it and I'd not heard of fakers copying that. I've already done other checks like wiring colours and was pretty sure it wasn't a fake but this is added confirmation.

Thanks Drew.
