Yep, I saw this fact reported as fining Apple equivalent to just 55 minutes of their profits :headbang:

It would be a great source of amusement if I was able to figure out what 55 minutes of my profits was.

Reminds me of something I saw a while back. I can't recall the exact wording, nor am I able to attribute it, but I'll paraphrase:

"Fines are a mechanism to make some laws optional for the rich".

Not just the rich :-) It is a (now) well known effect that, contrary to intuition, trying to incentivize a behavior by putting a fine on the opposite one tends to backfire spectacularly..

Think it was in Freakonomics that the authors described how fining people for picking up children later at preschool ended up increasing the amount of late pick-ups rather than reducing it.

The way fines would work is to set 'em so disproportionate, that it'd become unacceptable in a non-authoritarian society.

The issue with Apple's hideous behaviors (not that they are the only ones) - such as designing for obsolescence and purposely creating not easily repairable designs, not to mention overpriced with respect to the functionality they offer - is not in the fact that they are rich.. is in the fact that load of people keep buyin' them nonetheless, making it rich. :)

"You can't legislate for stupid." ;)

P.S. for the avoidance of doubt, I don't really think all Apple customers are stupid (hence the smiley face), it just seemed an appropriate moment for a quote I rather like.
