Monitors for £200-£250 for the pair??

My son needs some new monitors, as in speakers, but can only budget up to around £250 for a pair, if that. He currently does most of his mixing on some decent headphones and a terrible pair of really cheap Behringer speakers. So is there anything at that sort of price range which is even worth considering for mixing on? Could be second hand, of course. I'm thinking active but an amp/speakers combo would be fine too.

I managed to pick up a pair of passive AE22s for just over £200, and IMO they give a lot of performance for the price. You'd need to wait a bit as they don't come up often, and adding an old hifi amp or similar might stretch the budget slightly.
The active version got a pretty good review from someone called Dr Robjohns

If you hunt around you might find a pair of Kali LP6 or Adam T5V for just about that price...?
If that's too much, the Presonus Eris 5 seem to get reasonably positive comments.

That sounds a really good buy. I have a pair of actives and they are easily the best speakers I've ever owned.

The best I can say about them is that they sound like my AKG phones, which in my world is a heap of goodness.

I have a buddy who owns some PreSonus Eris 4.5 monitors that were pretty affordable, around $200 USD, but I'd just go a step up and get the 5's. If you're willing to spend around $300 USD (around 257 euros) I can personally recommend JBL 305p mkII. I use these and they sound superb.

The problem I had with mine is that they kept falling over, so the phono input jack’s grounding became undone from g forces. Really unstable physical design... just moving the connecting wires topples them. Normally I’d take the main unit apart and re-solder the jacks but disassembly is as inscrutable as an iPad so I was ready to ditch them. Happily, as long as they lay on their sides the 1/8” input jack works fine, so I hooked them up to my TV in the family room. They sound great!

Yes a friend of mine has the active version. Mike Senior is a huge fan. (Of the AE22s, not my friend.)

I love the HS series - they're not exactly a fun listen compared to some, but that's fine by me. The HS5 is probably a little shy on low end ... but if he has decent headphones that should help in that regard?
