Recommend your electronic songs here...
Hello everyone.
First year at uni and i am doing music tech, but haven't really been in to electronica until now. Could people leave their recomendations for any sort of electronica music? I'm open to any variations you may have.
Thank you
Nick

I've become a big Imogen Heap / Frou Frou fan this year. A lot of interesting sounds and arrangements.

Personally...
Remarc and Congo Natty are among my favourites, along with some of the older Bristol stuff (Roni Size, Krust, Die...)
I'll have a think though, as the above isn't quite what I'd describe as having 'broad appeal'...
Oh yeah, I recommend this:
Boxcutter DJ mix
It's quite contemporary.
Cheers!

I'm a big fan of some of Jimmy Edgar's music...check out the "Bounce, Make, Model" EP, not normally something I'd go for but got sent it by Warp for some reason and subsequently got quite into it.

You should check out warp records.

Bytes or Spanners by black dog, surfing on sine waves by polygon window and selected ambient works by aphex twin are all worth a listen, as is the later stuff from the same artists (polygon window = aphex twin BTW)
Some other names you might want to check out / type into google (probably showing my age a bit!):
Orbital (Lush, Halcyon, Belfast would be my favourites)
Underground Resistance
Derrick May
Juan Atkins
Kevin Saunderson
Carl Craig
Ritchie Hawtin a.k.a Plastic Man
Dan Curtin
Air
Daft Punk
Laurant Garnier
R&S
Peacefrog
Platypus
B12
Kraftwerk (obviously!)
Luke Slater
Boards of Canada
Squarepusher
LTJ Bukem
Moving Shadow
Metalheadz
+ there are countless DJ mix albums out there if you're interested in the dancy stuff.

Hi,
For fairly contemporary stuff I have to second the Frou Frou / Imogen Heap material, some really interesting arrangements and soundscapes in there.
Can't beleive no-ones mentioned Vince Clark yet, particularly Yazoo and early Depeche Mode stuff. Give it a listen.

Yes, I suspect you're right - I'll move it to MRT so that more people can offer their recommendations.

Re: Recommend your electronic songs here...
I suggest you go back to the originators of classical electronic music :
Mario Davidovsky
Otto Luening
Pierre Henry
Pierre Schaeffer
And the tape compositions of John Cage and Earle Brown, and the live electronic music Cage did with David Tudor.
Also Xenakis, Stockhausen, Berio
Then move on to the originators of modern electronica such as :
Kraftwerk
Tangerine Dream
If you haven't heard this early electronic music it will be an exciting revelation.
Also check out the 50s sci-fi film soundtracks, they are sometimes pure electronica.
Are you at York University? If you are I think they would expect you to know about the early pioneers.

Mouse on Mars 'Glam' and 'Instrumentals' are very good albums.
Radiohead's 'Kid A' is a stone cold classic.
The Stereolab album 'Dots and Loops' is great.

Kraftwerk - in particular Man Machine and Trans Europe Express albums.
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi album. I know they are considered 'rock' but this is essentially an electronic album, superbly done at that.
+1 for Radiohead - Kid A.

Seconded, absolutely incredible. The psychedelic side of electronica tends to have some amazing synthetic yet organic sounds!
