Oh me oh my....

... my 'go to' spoken word mic in the late '70s...

Being realistic I'm no longer in the market, but at that price for those who are it's a no-brainer...

Out of stock with Sennheiser. No one else seems to be selling them at that price.

oops, you're right. but it seems it's UK only.

in gear4 music (where I just got it), if you select UK price is 339 GBP, while selecting Spain it's 207 EUR...

I offer myself to buy them with a 10% special fee for SOS people :lol:

I don’t really see what the point of this month long offer is. It’s not possible to order the mic from Sennheiser themselves and all of the online stores linked to from the Sennheiser site have it at their usual price. Seems a bit like false advertising to me.

Report them to the ASA then...

It would be worth asking Sennheiser directly where this product can be obtained at the advertised price, I think I saw someone selling close to that price yesterday but don't remember where it was, I don't think it was from the UK.

I'm keeping an eye on this offer, and the conversation does help keep this topic high on the list as a reminder. But it is worth considering that it is still only the 3rd of the month and we are already in a weekend.

So I am going to be optimistic and hope that fresh stocks are due at Sennheiser and the dealers soon. Of course, there should have been planning to ensure reasonable stock levels right from the gun. But I think in current circumstances we can cut them a little slack in the supply chain.

The Sennheiser website does state, “ Up to 50% off, only while supplies last!” of course. However, for supplies to run out by 7:00 am on the second day of a month long offer does rather suggest that they had not really planned to sell very many at that price.

I’ve ordered from Thomann, anyway.

Possibly a question for John Willett, how closely matched are any two MD421s?

I've already mentioned that I used one a lot for spoken word back in the day. (Specifically as a presenter mic for music progs; I used it 'up close')

It's something of an 'industry-standard' on toms - or a bodhran in your circles. :)

It also appears quite often in somewhat older vids of well-known groups live - being used as a vocal mic. Similarly in older 'live at the BBC' etc type recordings.

I've seen/heard them acquitting themselves well as NOS pairs for stereo recording of choirs/orchestras too.

I think the Elf has a few... he can give his own perspective.

If I was still truly active in the recording/live malarkey I wouldn't hesitate at that price. For me (probably reflecting my vintage) it's one of the 'go-to' mics like the Neumann U87, and the Beyerdynamic 201

There's a review here (Don't be put off by the first minute or so - he's an extrovert, but does know his stuff): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYGlWFzb8uY

The irony being, when I've put this in front of a bodhran player they pulled faces.

In the olden days we bought some mics from a studio that was closing down and an original 421 was in the sale. We really had no idea what to do with it til the sound engineer saw it and got very excited. For a while our tom sound was the highlight of the gigs. By the time I flounced out of the band we had quite a collection.

I've kept an eye out for one since but haven't seen one with a decent price/provenance balance, until now.

Nice on the right voice, acoustic guitar, double bass. In my limited experience anyhing that needs solidity and focus without taking over the whole stage.

Thanks all. Perhaps I will have a flutter if I can still get one at the current price.

Cheers,

CC

Edit: trigger pulled on a Thomann one at £185. The cheap ones do appear to have dropped over the horizon otherwise.

International sale.

$199.95 (US). What is that like 154 pounds sterling?

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... microphone

Great jazz tone rather than a rock and roll tone. Many special purpose bass drum mics sound like heavy metal to me. I prefer this guy for jazzy bass drum.
