Keyboard/Synth Virtual Meetup

Post by Dave B »

Hi everyone,

The idea has been floated in the Lounge that we could do some sub-forum/sub-topic Zoom meetups during Lockdown II (The British Empire Strikes Back). I am happy to host so I thought I'd float the idea here.

I was thinking we could do one to chat about people's experiences with the various One Synth Challenges and provide help / support / inspiration for other participants? Failing that, we can just have a general one where we show off our favourite kit.. ;)

Would people be interested? If so, any preference for day of the week?

I'd be sort-of interested - if only to see what the competition are up to
I'd probably spend more time listening/watching than talking (not such a bad thing!). Any questions I ask are likely to be ones of the (every one knows the answer to) type!

I've no particular preference for times/days, although Thursdays are usually my main shopping day.

Definitely a 'yes' here - as long as I can play my Teisco!

I’d like to be involved, but I’m a newbie to zoom and our broadband is currently slower than my first ever modem!

I’m in if timing works out!
I’d be interested in any unusual pieces of gear and why they are unusual/cool. Or perhaps non-traditional ways to use a traditional synth if anyone is doing that.

IAA - I have a similar problem and sometimes just use the audio in Zoom and mute the video and if that doesn’t work then I go for a walk.

I'm in for this one as well - thanks for the instigation Dave B!

No particular timing preference, other than a weekday evening (I suspect many of us have other commitments - if only musical ones - at the weekend)

EDIT: Monday evening is also a bit iffy for me normally, as I attend a local Djembe Drumming circle that night, although it will once again be cancelled during the lockdown.

I’d be interested. One of our local synth clubs has been doing it regularly. We even had a few battery operated jams until the National Park rangers shut us down...

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

I'd be interested although more in a passive observer role, as I'm not much good about talking about my gear.

A frayed knot ;)

This is primal tribal stuff, rather than funky rhythms.

Martin, if it's cancelled during lockdown, how about we kick off with this coming Monday - 9th Nov?

Or do we wait for the week after when there's no regular SOS forum zoom call?

Drumming has indeed been canceled for the next month, so next Monday 9th would be fine with me. Judging by my musical activities, the weekend tends to be fruitful, so if others find the same than reporting back on Monday evenings for the time being should give us plenty to talk about.

I'd also be happy to move it later on to fortnightly Wednesdays in-between normal SOS Meets. Let's see what everyone else thinks.

Monday 9th works for me - I'll figure something out camera-and-audio-wise so that I can tickle an ivory or two if the need arises. Feeding zoom from the desk should allow both mic and line inputs.

I would LOVE to join you but I fear the time difference and my schedule will be very prohibitive to my ever joining. :(

These are all NYC time:

Mondays and Thursdays are out, I run a Call of Cthulhu and D&D game those nights (probably not surprising to anyone, I am a lifelong tabletop gaming enthusiast)
Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have Shaolin kung fu class from 5-8pm. (Virtual, atm, of course. I am also a lifelong student of traditional CMA)
Every other Saturday I run a 3rd D&D game, 5-9pm.

Fridays, Sundays, and every other Saturday generally work for me.

I’m really bummed that I will miss out on this! I hope there are more in the near future!

Eddy, you might want to look into Voicemeeter Banana, it’s what I use to stream and mix audio to and from the Interwebs. It’s Windows only and bit cranky to set up, but it works a treat once you do!

Darn - the 9 is both my ex-wife and current wife’s BD. I’ll see if I’m allowed to appear.

Surely you could use both as the excuse for the other?
