water-proof road cases

Hi all

I’ve acquired (the components of) a valuable turntable. I’m considering investing the time/money to fix it up. The problem is that I live in a flood zone. Cannot move. Most of the time it’s dry, but Hurricane Sandy put me in over 6 feet of water.

I am exploring the viability of waterproof containment. Anybody have any experience with water-proof road cases? I’d imagine this itself could get quite expensive, but it’s worth it in terms of protecting the turntable / the investment of time.

Pelicase?

Often available second hand but they're built to last and parts (seals, etc.) easily available.

T/Ts could be fettled into a removable inner platform with some basic skills and a magic wand.

Also a handy flotatation device if the worst does happen.

Those are really good quality and, if memory serves, there is a version with a good seal.

I don't see a specific sealed model there* but I do see that they're available in Blue Glitter - fabulous!

*Liquid gasket could be applied in the lid, of course.

That was my first thought as well. I don't have any personally but they have a good reputation and I know quite a few people that use them with no complaints.

Another vote here for Peli cases (or Storm cases which are slightly lighter and fill in some of the sizes missing from the Peli range). I've got around 30 of them ranging from mobile phone sized up to big enough to hold 10U racks and I can't really fault them. They keep out water, dust, and, with suitable foam linings, will protect the contents from pretty serious knocks. And they have lifetime guarantees against manufacturing defects or failures in pretty much any reasonable use. They're not cheap but there are good savings from buying used and they generally have better resale values than most other flight case style boxes.

Another vote for Pelican cases here - really built to last - I have several from SD Card Case to one which contains several large and precious instruments.

Thanks for all the help. Here's my thinking...get a case big enough for other gear as well. My mac, interface, drives, and some mics. Then there's new issues presented. First, this is my table: https://vinylnirvana.com/ar-turntable-r ... s/ar-etl-1. Can something like this be stored vertically? As is? or maybe if I remove the platter first? I'm going to tend toward a case that'd likely be too narrow to just keep the turntable horizontal. Next there's issues of magnets (dynamic mics and phono cartridge) in proximity with hard drives. Ugh.

Don't get me started on speakers...Magnetic, and not huge, but still occupy space. Maybe some things just have to go bye bye in a flood. Ugh again

In cases like this you need to think about the risk in relation to how easy it is to replace under insurance.
So a pair of monitors might be a core and expensive part of your studio. But should be like for like replaceable easily enough.
But a hard drive with your latest work on? Is it backed up? And where are those back-ups stored? Because that might be irreplaceable.
So it's not really about how valuable something is, but how unique it is.

I wouldn't go for one big case as it will soon become unwieldy. I'd check the manufacturer's recommendations for your turntable but generally I'd remove the platter and any weights on the arm. There may also be transit screws that need to be tightened to hold parts in place when the turntable is moved.

One other possibility is to use waterproof aluminium cases like those made by Zarges. I'm not sure that these will withstand complete submergence but in my experience you can certainly stand them in a few inches of water and have water falling on them while the contents stay completely dry.
