External mic pre into babyface pro fs line/instrument input
External mic pre into babyface pro fs line/instrument input
Would there be deterioration of sound quality by connecting an external mic pre like gap pre73 to the babyface pro fs line/instrument input (analog in 3 and 4)? Im under the impression these are hiZ inputs???

Inputs 3/4 are indeed unbalanced and high impedance connections.
Ideally, it would be better to use the balanced line 1/2 inputs, but I don't expect you'll have any quality issues hooking up your Gap to inputs 3/4. Just remember that the input max level is +13dBu, and use TS-TS cables to make sure the cold side of the output transformer is grounded. (It may not be if you use TRS-TRS cables)

Thank you Hugh! Good to hear as I wanted to use input 3 and 4 as two extra inputs for mics (of course with a external mic pre).
Speaking of external mic pres... how about using my Mackie vlz1202 pro as mic pre (of course not with the Neve character...)?

Sure. Being unbalanced you may have to take steps top avoid ground loops if you're unlucky, but I suspect it will all work just fine.

Sure. I've always quite liked the Mackie VLZ preamps as a clean, quiet, competent design. I've found it best to take the preamp outputs from the insert point sends which avoids any noise/distortion and headroom limitations associated with the EQ and mix bus circuitry.

Hi Hugh,
Thank you!
I dont fully understand the insert point thing on the mackie. Where to put my cable to route into my babyface?

In the insert socket for the relevant mic channel on the back panel of the mixer.
On the Mackie, the signal comes out on the T of the TRS socket. You don't need a return, so using a standard TS cable will work. Unbalanced, so there is a ground loop risk.

Reliably fallible.
