Thomann T Bone Mic Screen any good?

Post by Andi »

Obviously "inspired by" the SE Refexion filter but at only £80 it looks like a bargain, anyone know if it's any good, well made, mounts on a stand OK, etc?

Hi Andi

Got mine a couple of weeks ago to replace my home made effort.

The thing is pretty well made and fits onto a normal stand quite nicely but, as with all of these screens, they are fundamentally unstable and you should use the most substantial stand available. I speak from bitter experience as I initially mounted mine on a stand with a small base because I couldn't be bothered getting a more suitable one out of my attic at the time. Before I had chance to get the better stand out I knocked the whole lot over hitting my laptop and breaking off the return key.

As to acoustic performance - it works but I've not had chance to make a direct comparison with my mates SE Screen.

Fi MW

thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure it'll work fine - I've been getting by with a bit of spare PC case acoustic insulation balanced on the stand behind my mic and it works OK, just wondered if it broke the first time it came out of the box, or wouldn't fix onto the stand or something - it is a LOT cheaper than the SE Reflexion after all!!

Hi Andi

I probably didn't make myself entirely clear. The screen is built like a brick out-house and is still very much in one piece (unlike my laptop). All of these shields are unstable on 'normal' (read budget) stands so you need to exercise caution (which I didn't). Mechanically I think the T Bone is fine and probably equal to the SE. I read a review on the SE which said that it was made up of several layers of absorber and suggested that some development work had gone into the design. I'm not entirely convinced that the T Bone is anything more than a thin layer of mineral wool covered by some foam - but it works, has more adjustment than my home made effort and looks better.

Hi there,

Can you please let me know what the dimensions of the micscreen are please.

I want t make sure my Rode NT2A doesn't stick out when mounted within the mic screen, if you see what I mean.

Cheers ...
