I am really glad, I found this forum! I purchased a O2RV2 a few days ago. Fortunately, I survived a lot of the general O2R bashing (when reading the comments) ;).

The board has some miles, it spent the early 2000’s as the PA mixer for the TV show Jeopardy, beginning with Season 2! The original label tape, showing inputs during its use on the show, is still in place. It was handed over to me by the A1 “sound man” of the show, who served the show for 19 years.

The first thing I do is cleaning the faders with canned air. I don’t know, if I will open the board. The faders are ok, they just could move a bit smoother. And, after I took a photo, i will remove the old label tape…

My set up is:

O2RV2 (3 x AES cards, 1 x ADAT)
Lynx Aurora 16
1 x 500er rack with preamps, eq’s, compressors

I am thinking about getting a Yamaha SPX90 for effects, too.

I really hope, I will find some useful YouTube videos to get a start with the Yamaha!

Greetings,
Thorsten

The O2R was good in its day, and you can certainly get a lot of good use out of one even now. But it is a big, heavy beast, a bit convoluted (especially the card routing) and its sound quality was not the best, especially by modern standards. But good luck with that desk, and what an interesting legacy!

@The Elf:
Thanks! Yes, it has really a great history and I am literally only the second owner, the board was gifted to the “Sound Man” of the show a few years ago.
And I think no one complaint about the sound of “Jeopardy” during the years of the O2R ;) .

“Bad” and “Good” sound depends on the abilities of the one behind the mixer, just my opinion. Yes, it is heavy and big, but I was able to get it to my little recording room.

Anyway, there are even some professionals, who still use the O2R, for instance Alan Parsons. James Taylor album “Hourglass” used that board, even the often dismissed A/D conversion.

But the good side about all the bashing is, that the price of the board is still affordable (around $500 - $1500) .

I recently purchased my O2R for £225, it has an ADAT card in slot 1 and a TC Unity card in slot 4. I also have the "No valid software found on Unity card in slot 4 Please upload valid software". Message.

So I do not even know if I will have a license (card number is 6000329). Holding the utility button during startup I see I have V2.16TC - (99/02/16) roms.

I would be cuffed if I could get this working, I have even thought of wiring an external switch to reset the demo period for the cad, but I need to get to the demo first!

Many thanks Dave

I changed the battery on one of mine a few weeks back but hooked up a temporary battery to the terminals whilst I had the old one out just in case it threw a wobbly - I appreciate that doesn't help you now but might be worth considering for next time.

Lastly, not sure what version of Windows you're running but last time I used the software, it was on XP..

Best of luck.

I just picked an 02R v2 up for a very reasonable price, along with three additional ADAT card and an 8 analogue input board. Got my eye on an analogue 8 in/ 8 out board and meter bridge but my biggest issue is making space for the desk itself in my small studio. I honestly didn't realise quite how big it was! :headbang:

Aside from that, it appears to be in full working order and very good condition for its age so once I get it located somewhere, I will start my journey on learning how to use this thing, and it's nice to know there are a few active users here still that I can pester for assistance ;)

My 'ex ITV' 02R still going strong as part of my home studio.

There's no longer an 02R at the main studio since the move back in July - all duties are now handled by the DM2000 / ML5000. I've got some 'location' type recordings to do just before xmas and a couple after the new year too so I'll be taking an 02R for them all.

I think the 100 hours license is not 100 hours of use but 100 hours from the time the card is first used.

So I thought time for plan be. I had a small switch handy, drilled a small hole in the end plate.

2 wires to the switch, one onto the CR-232 battery, a bit of insulation tape on top, then the other under the battery terminal.

One hardware license switch in place!

Just FYI, the post above was reported as contravening the forum rules related to "pirate/cracked/illegal software".

As a general policy that rule certainly stands, but in this case as both the Unity card and its configuration software are obsolete, a hack is the only option left for those keen to continue using this product.

So, no further action required and post left in place. I just wanted to let other forum members know of the reason why to avoid any further reports.

Agreed, I would rather of had the free license from TC Unit*y than have to do this.

Shame they lost their licence application

Has anyone successfully updated the firmware EPROMS on their 02R?

I have seen some chips for sale that upgrade the 02R to its final version of 2.16.

Are these simply socketed chips that one can pop out and replace with the correct chip removal tool or is it a bit more elaborate than that?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, two chips that simply replace the existing ones. I popped my old ones out with a wooden skewer and pushed the new ones in carefully by hand. It's a 10 minute job - just be careful not to bend the legs on the chips..

Fantastic, thank you! I will order the chips now.

I managed to find a meter bridge for a decent price the other day and I've got the CD8-AD 8in/8out analogue card coming next week. Along with the 3x ADAT cards (one of which will be removed) I think I'm set :)

By the way, do you, or anyone else for that matter, know of any good 02R tutorials out there? I don't mind whether they're video tutorials, online courses or printed material. I just want to properly learn how to use this thing :)

Hi, I've owned my O2R since it was released in the '90s and would LOVE to enable the M2000 TC. I bought it with the TC Unity card, licensed with the Finalizer option. Its installed in slot 2 and I have an ADAT card in slot 1. Configured as an insert on BUS 5/6...
I have the manual and good for me, I wrote the S/N and code down.

S/N: 6300050
Finalizer: LIC5475D58A5734C6EEF98D

Not sure where you find the "dealer code"... I bought it from Long & McQuade (the original Bloor store before they expanded nation wide).

I still have the original TC Unit-Y User Manual Version 2 (Rev 3/1998). Says "backup battery life > 10 years" and I can concur, 23 years and still going! Do I need to worry about it dying and losing its software??

BTW, the 100 hours is based on the O2R being powered, doesn't matter if you use the card or not...

PS, the TC Unit-Y card came with O2R OS EPROMs (latest version as of November 1998) that had to be installed in the new O2R to ensure it was at the latest version and compatible with 2.10 TC.

Superb - looking great!

As for tutorials, I didn't find a definitive guide but the best advice I can give you is to get it setup for how you work. You can then quickly build other patches off this template rather than go through the bother of having to set it up each time.

I'm not sure how you work but, personally, I like running the 'stereo' channels (17-24) as my audio sub-groups as it gives dynamics and EQ over each pair in addition to the dynamics and EQ over the L/R bus. Having 16 channels, 8 groups and two fx returns without changing page is great and even if you double up to 32 channels using the cards, it's only one page change and that's only if you 'need' faders..

My 2.16 chips just arrived! Before I open up the 02R, can you confirm the location of the firmware chips on the board? I'm looking through the service manual, but can't locate them.

Are they easily accessed simply by opening up the unit and lifting the top panel or do I have to dig deeper?

Thanks in advance :)

Excellent! That saved me a load of bother :) Thank you!

2.16TC chips fitted and everything seems to be fully operational.

However, I wanted to run the diagnostics but I can't seem to invoke the test system as outlined in the service manual. It tells me to hold down the STEREO SEL button and CURSOR > button together and power the device on. I get the pop up that says "DIAGNOSTICS? CANCEL EXECUTE" but when I select EXECUTE and hit enter, the system just seems to ignore it. Any suggestions? Did they change something in the 2.16 OS?

I've tried a system init. and that hasn't helped.
