Multitrack Live (on stage) Recording Software

Post by OliverATX »

Hello,

I hope everyone is doing great!

I am trying to record my son's band as much as possible. We are using an XR18 and last gig we used a laptop connected via USB to record the band. I used Waves Tracks Live and got good results. I imported the stems into my DAW (Presonus Studio One) and it worked out pretty good.

Now, Waves is discontinuing support for Tracks Live and I am about to setup something a bit more integrated into the rack (rather than a laptop) to record. I would rather not start with a discontinued piece of software.

That said, since my primary DAW is Studio One, I wonder if I can use Studio One to record on stage? I have read posts before where people have stated that full-blown DAWs are not a good choice as they may not be stable enough to record for 2-3 hours at a time?

Obviously, if using a full DAW is not an issue, I would much rather use Studio One, which I am familiar with than let's say start with something like Reaper, which I believe is the recommended successor to Tracks Live (besides the fact that I'd rather not pay for additional licensing).

Any thoughts on using Studio One for this use case?

Thank you as usual!

Reaper works well for this - I've used a 17 year old Acer laptop for recording 24 tracks simultaneously though I've only used my newer (10 year old) Windows 10 laptop with a Behringer mixer. Provided you don't try to create any complex plug-in chains you don't need a powerful laptop and I've had Reaper running for many hours at a time.

However, I would be surprised if Studio One couldn't do the job.

Thank you for the quick reply. Yes, I was hoping the same. No offense to Reaper, but I really do not want to add another tool if I do not have to.

I am using a mini pc with a Core i5 proc, 8G of ram and a 160G SSD. Should be sufficient to run Studio One easily for recording only...

Thanks!

I'd just stick with Studio One, as long as you're not trying to do a load of processing on the way in you should be fine.

Yes, will do. I have already stripped the DAW to minimum (no plugins, loops, etc. installed) and optimized the PC (i.e. turned off all power savings and throttling). Recording is a straight-forward 12-mic and 1 direct-in configuration. No additional routing, no processing- so should be OK :-)

I'm using an XR-18 + Cantabile software running on an old, low spec, Windows laptop. Cantabile produces a single multitrack wav file which I then split into multiple files using Audacity and import into Cubase for processing.

As above,Ialso use an XR-18 and record the multi-track in Cantabile (which also runs the whole show) for later import into a DAW. Works nicely.

I am sure Cantabile is a good solution, but in my particular situation I do not really want to get into using multiple pieces of software, learning new workforce and having to take sidesteps to convert recording formats if I don't have to.

Running some tests this weekend to see how Studio One can work for me. This would be the obvious choice as I world not even have to do stem imports and can use the same UI and track configurations for both, the recording and exhorting.

Will keep yall posted how it works out.

Thank you!

This is a useful utility if your hardware/software will only generate polywave files:

Either. If I used Studio One for recording, I would just drag the "Song" folder into my Studio One Editor and be done. All tracks, colors input configs, etc. would be there.

I am sure this is a great tool, but I want to avoid creating the issue of having to deal with this type of conversion in the first place.....Thanks for the response.

If you're using Studio One, you might be able to use Presonus Capture as it's designed for just what you want, and its projects can be opened directly in Studio One (although it may only work with Presonus mixers and interfaces).

You hit the nail on the head. It's restricted to Studio One Live mixers. I am trying Studio One this weekend. Since it is literally straight up recording without effects, routing, processing, etc. I hope I am going to be fine on the Core i5.
