Might be worth a trip to Youtube, though it is easy to get distracted by daft cats and gormless dogs videos!

I may be wrong, but I think the idea of bargain CDs with WAV and MIDI files might have fallen by the wayside nowadays. It depends what you're looking for, but in terms of free software, people would generally start with a free DAW with VST support (which I think Sequel 3 possibly is, haven't tried it; Cakewalk by Bandlab is another example that springs to mind if you're on Windows) together with offerings like the free Kontakt Player and Spitfire Labs.

What sort of samples are you after? There's a huge range of sample libraries out there, of basically every instrument you can think of. No point anypne pointing you to some top ocarina samples when you want the latest bangin' beatz or a symphonic orchestra.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

@OP, What sampler are you using and what sort of sampled things are you interested in ?

Spitfire audio have some nice sampled things, some of which are free to download and use in their VST player.

There's a Fairlight collection available somewhere online which has been mention on the forum previously.

Maybe sample CDs will come back in vogue like vinyl!
They are a bit too convenient though, so floppy discs are a 'better' option. :)

Zero-G used to do a lot of sample discs but I suspect they are download only now.
They tended to be DVD in later years for the extra capacity.
