M1 Air Apple Care

So seeing as my new M2 MBP wasn't so good,I bought a new M1 Air, because I read that its pretty good, and I also read that the M2 Air suffers the same fate at the M2 MBP unless you fork out for more Memory and Bigger SSD, which has to do with the missing NAND chip in the lower spec models resulting in lower transfer rates and overheating leading to Thermal Throttling. My previous Intel Air died on the operating table when I tried to replace the internal battery and sound gizmos, and it is much missed.

But I digress. My question is what is Apple Care worth? I remember Dixons Days when if you bought a PP3 battery you'd be pressed to buy insurance for it, so I declined to buy Apple Care. But when I got home I thought about it, and remembered my Intel MBP, whose battery failed after 3 months. I had no Apple Care, and as the MBP was a fixed item, always plugged in, I wasn't too bothered. They told me at the shop I could buy the M1 Air Care later, but the price would jump from 130 Pounds Sterling for a year's cover to 160 Quid.

Does Apple Care insure you against accidents for example?

I'm kind of with you most of the time. The infant mortality part of the classical bathtub curve for device failure is almost certainly covered by the statutory guarantee on the product, and the wear out phase is probably where you'd be thinking you'd got the best out of the device anyway and will probably be looking at a new one.

But we have had Apple Care on a couple of products and have had great no-quibble repairs including an Air mainboard, an MBP display and a cracked iPhone screen

Everyone seems to have their own feelings about them, which is fine. It's a good job they are optional.

I was more than happy to buy an extended warranty with my last laptop. It helps guarantee the three years useful life I desire from it.

I'd certainly agree if we were talking about gear that was reasonably fixable. However, Apple gear isn't as fixable as most other electronics so any repairs seem to be expensive so an extended warranty may be justified in this case.

If I was buying Apple I would maybe see if they would include an extended warranty in the price. When I was buying lots of computer gear for work, we bought a batch of around 8 Dell laptops which came with a 3 year onsite warranty as standard. I think we made use of it twice - one of those was after 2 years 10 months.

Your thread on this M2 mbp "If you really must" made me chortle.

I have a threshold of expenditure on computers, tablets : where without warranty, without apple care, if something goes drastically wrong I'm alright with it, a shrug and oh well.

Beyond this threshold of expenditure I go for at least two years warranty, care. For peace of mind more than anything else.
So I can just get on with whatever I'm doing.

Reminds me of when my Digital Leica had a major issue. I phoned one of the more reputable Leica repairers. Kindly gentleman said he could repair any Mechanical Leica but not a Digital.

It's similar with modern cars all this software.
I far prefer driving a tractor, not that I have a tractor.

Sorry for my previous blunt statement!
Shops push extended warranties so they’re clearly profitable, which means they’re rarely needed. If you buy lots of stuff, and get warranties on everything, you might need one once, but will have shelled out more in total (on all your goods) than repairing or replacing it at your own expense.

Also, most things have a 1 year as standard. With computers, if they last a year they’ll last for ever as long as you look after then and don’t routinely spill a glass of wine on your keyboard etc. I’ve had macs for years for example, my iPhone is 4 years old, my iPad older…

And, check out the small print of these policies. The commonest things that fail (batteries?) won’t be covered.

And, built in obsolescence. Chances are when your mac fails, it won’t be worth repairing anyway as it won’t run the latest OS/software.

Just my views, but I never go for the warranty beyond the standard (except maybe with a car - if BMW offer me an extension when the 3 years standard is up I’ll probably take it)

Not to mention the list of EXCESS items where you are NOT fully covered by the warranty. Remember you will be dealing with insurance companies, the most dastardly dudes on the planet when it comes to coughing up.

By the way, my Intel MBP with the the 4 usb c ports just went down to 3 ports today, no amount of resetting thingymajiggies brought it back to life, oh well. Also I locked myself out of my new M1 MBA because her indoors demanded I STOP what I was doing. i had just made up a password, and by the time i got back i forgot it. So normal day with mac then.
