Windows 11 for musicians
Windows 11 for musicians - any comments ?
early days yet for me but I ve not noticed any audio funnies. There are of course changes which seem unneccessary, which will have to be got used to or set back to what they were but thats as per usual.
right click "rename" being changed to an icon is my biggest irritation.

Try WinaeroTweaker to reverse some of the foolish Microsoft decisions. The right-click context menu having all its most useful functions dropped into a secondary menu was my biggest gripe.

Re: Windows 11 for musicians
It seems pretty stable and seems finally to be able to handle going into suspend with an open project in reaper and then having everything just work when you resume. Biggest annoyance is losing the right click 'show the desktop' option from the task bar, I have no idea why they did that. Note to self. It's a horrible rainy day here. Why not go and set up my streamdeck to put a shortcut button for that up ( I love the stream deck and the midi plugin authors finally fixed the bug where the plugin couldn't reconnect if the midi device was powered off without a restart, yay)
Re: Windows 11 for musicians
One of the best courses I ever attended demanded that we use a Windows PC for three days with no mouse. That taught me a lot of shortcuts that most people aren't even aware of.

Re: Windows 11 for musicians
In my opinion you'll never reach professional speeds in many programs without becoming a shortcut demon. That includes every piece of software I've ever used extensively; Pro Tools, Studio One, Photoshop, Resolve and others, including Windows itself. Everything is slower using only the mouse, as many do.

One of the best things for me about Wind 10/11 is touchscreen : that's the only type desktop laptop I buy.
Mouse what's that.
Fingers only.
Until you've tried Arturia's Yamaha CS80v on a touchscreen you haven't lived lol.
Funny thing when I switch to my macbook and imac I'm tapping the screen wondering why nothing's happening

You might put your fingers through the screen emulating the polyphonic aftertouch though

I might end up doing that

One of the joys is noodling the ribbon controller on touchscreen.
I was kind of waiting for the right polyAT keyboard and Keith McMillen just released it : K-Board-C.
Also does MPE.

Looks interesting, affordable and out of stock. I still need to throw those little hammers, though.

Re: Windows 11 for musicians
I have the same experience

Hadn't checked out your site in yonks until seeing this post.
I still recall from yonks ago the fun cgi animation you did for buffer overrun.
I'm all in AMD now. Although seeing your MS Surface8 I'm considering elcheapo Surface4 and i5 after what you said about i7 heat and throttling in Surface.
Even though I dig iPad, can't beat getting full fledged sw on Wind tablets.

Roland app.
I tried to use a Roland h/w editor tonight on W11, it came up ok, contacted the h/w and then froze totally. Its always worked in the past on W10.
Possibly it worked on 11 previously but I cant remember the last time I called it up. Take W11 previous with a pinch of salt.
Internet had the solution which was to [set properties &] run it in Administrator mode [also win 8 compatability was suggested but I haven found that necessary].

Re: Windows 11 for musicians
As a side note I'm still perfectly happy running Windows 7, but today for the very first time my Brave Browser threw up a warning that they won't be doing any more updates for Windows 7, so I might have to finally take the plunge at some stage

Re: Windows 11 for musicians
I feel for you Martin. A few years ago I had thought I might stay with Windows 7, but needed 8.1 to run some very necessary software, which now requires Windows 10. I've not regretted the upgrade; it's been more reliable than Windows 7 which is, of course, a good thing! I'm now wondering for how many years I can avoid Windows 11/12/13?

Re: Windows 11 for musicians
Thanks for the sympathy
In my case I'm still perfectly happy with the performance of my PC and Windows 7, and I also have installed on it lots of software that I probably won't ever be able to use again (like Camel Audio's Alchemy, now Mac-only and owned by Apple, but within which I have around 300 creations of my own that I'd be lost without as options for my own music).
I always knew this time would come eventually

Martin - just about every piece of software that I've tried from the last 20 years has run fine under Windows 10. According to the thread at

Alchemy runs under Windows 10 and you are even namechecked on that thread too!

You need to go through that list and determine exactly what won't run. Perhaps keep the old machine going just for those few. Win10 is a worthwhile upgrade for many reasons.

Wow - never seen that thread before. Thanks James - it's also good to know that my Alchemy sound library contributions are still remembered

However, having read the thread, it's the Digital Rights stuff that worries me, as I also did tech support for Camel Audio, and while their cleverly-written Alchemy install process did resolve a mountain of our previous tech support issues, by checking what each user did and didn't have on their hard drive that they had officially purchased, and then automatically downloading any files required, this did rely on being able to 'phone home' to the Came Audio web site, which of course no longer exists.
I do have backups of absolutely every file and Alchemy library, but according to that thread I would probably need to download a cracked version of Alchemy that bypasses the digital rights stuff so that I could successfully install it and my libraries on a new machine, despite the fact that I legitimately owned everything.

Will the Alchemy authorisation survive a migration to a new disk (as you would need if you replaced an HDD with an SSD)? If so, then I would be tempted to take a disk image of your existing disk - or even clone the disk to another one as a safety precaution - and then try an in place upgrade to Windows 10. While Microsoft said that they would stop people doing this, as I understand it, they have never actually done that so it is still possible to upgrade a Windows 7 installation to Windows 10 for free.
