Hello everybody.
I promise i'm not being lazy! After good advice from the forum a while back I/we got a Zoom F8n.
The small klezmer type ensemble i'm now in, and recording too, love the Zoom but want a less fiddly means of control.
So it's ipad time.
We have all had a go at trawling the zoomcorp info/help/faq page but we are still unsure as to which version of ipad we need. (we wrote to zoom a while back, nothing yet).
This is mostly about version compatability. We can't throw oodles of money at this and we will probably only use the ipad for operating the F8n (probably).
Can anyone help us out or maybe even know the definitive answer.
I repeat, we have looked and uhmed and aahed... we are just unsure about which one to commit to!
Zoom F8n & ipad versions
Re: Zoom F8n & ipad versions
I've just grabbed my iPad, visited the App Store and found the Zoom F8 Control App.
Under compatibility it notes that it requires iPadOS 9.0 or later and then has a long list of comparable devices that effectively lists every iPad after the 3rd generation iteration.
Any current production iPad will be compatible as will any model from the last 5 years or more.
If you have access to an iPad you are considering using I would be happy to look it up on the list for you. Just go into Settings > General > About > Model Name which will give you all the information needed to check.

Is it about a bicycle?
Re: Zoom F8n & ipad versions
The newer the version iPad, the longer you'll get support for it in the future. It's a question of cost against longevity.
Of course any current working version of the app should stay working even if newer ones need a later OS than the iPad can be loaded with, but that might then stop you updating the Zoom firmware at a later date as well to get features or bug fixes that you'd really like to have.
It's a first world problem!

Reliably fallible.

Ah! I didn't realise that there was an app...
I have an FRC... standalone hardware, but does make the whole caboodle much easier to adjust and control. These days I'm nearly always working from a stereo mix, with the multitrack as a safety backup...

I bought the F-Control for a Zoom F8 when I had one (https://zoomcorp.com/en/ca/handheld-vid ... f-control/) and highly recommend it.
Of course you can do far more other (non-F8) stuff with an iPad, but if you seriously want a dedicated controller, there's nothing quite like physical faders for quick access.

Precisely!
My F-series is these days usually the hub of audio operations for my location video work. So there's a degree of multitasking which the FRC/F-Control makes far easier...
