Italo Disco drums

Post by Lavender Thief »

Hello

I'm interested in producing in the style of italo disco.
This is mainly a genre that was prominent in the 80's.
Back then they used drum machines/computers, like the LinnDrum.

So, would it actually be preferable to play all drums at the same volume, as the drums back then didn't tend to have an option for velocities?
In other words, would the less 'human/organic' it sound, the more retro it be?

Hey LT

I hope one of the legends of beat making in the World going back to the early 80s now a Grammy judge who just happens to be a mod on this forum stumbles upon this thread lol.

He has helpful tutorials on beat making, mixing on his samplecraze.com

considered one of the first Italo Disco which you already know
(which New Order borrowed from for Blue Monday) used a just released TR808.
Although 808 doesn't have velocity sensitivity (unless retro fitted with midi) it does have accents.

For a club, disco, whichever Drum machine : Linn, Roland, Emu, Akai, Boss, Alesis : would want the 4/4 beat to be constant in velocity to cut through to the clubbers.
However adding accents where you feel could do with accents.
