new Mac...couple of teething problems?

Post by paul tha other »

just bought a shinny new Mac studio with the new version of logic installed..im having a couple of teething things, but the one that is driving me crazy is my displays...bought a brand new monitor with it..that works fine.(its a gigabyte 32 inch mcq23) I've got another monitor that I have been using .its an older viewsonic thing but its HDMI...both monitors are fine when each of them are plugged in with HDMI and on their own..so I'm trying to get a 2 monitor setup so i bought a usb c to HDMI for the 2nd monitor...day 1 .I had a few glitches but it worked for most of the day..then when I came into the studio on day2 the 2nd monitor wouldn't work at all. I turned off an option for the app "spaces" and that seemed to sorted it(I can't remember which one) ,until this weekend just past...now the 2nd monitor is working sometimes then it goes blank, when it does that my Mac then slows down..even the mouse pointer has froze..the computer hasn't completly
frozen but almost, and won't un-freeze until I unplug the monitor...

both monitors are showing up in my displays in system settings but the 2nd monitor is still blank

any ideas?

do I need to get a special usb-c to HDMI lead for this..have I missed something?????

I'm not sure about special, but I have read about people having problems with some (cheap) USB to HDMI cables, and their solution was to buy the Apple one.
You might want to be sitting down when you see how much it costs though!

Info..
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT207443

and the item..
https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/M ... rt-adapter

You can get the Apple one in Amazon, sometimes they have it on offer- still not cheap.
Good luck!

I assumed I'd need an apple USB to HDMI cable but thought I'd try a cheaper Amazon alternative. So far been working great on Mac studio running cubase 12 pro

Swap round the HDMI connections to the monitors, that'll tell you if it's the monitor?

EDIT to add...

Is he running 2 monitors at the same time, as you are doing?
