Keyboard for piano playing as well as electronic music production?

Post by 77 »

I've decided to become a musician/producer. I'm interested in SO MANY genres/types of music (from Riddim Dubstep all the way to pop and even solo piano music) that I keep changing my mind, so I want to be flexible so I can use this keyboard as both a "digital piano"(with 88 weighted keys and all that) and also as a "workstation keyboard" where I can produce electronic music.

Like I said before, I've decided I want to be a musician, I just don't know WHAT types/genres of music I want to make.

I also want to do solo piano compositions of my own (on paper and then copying it some notation software etc) and upload it online, make techno music, so many things. I also have the highest version of FL Studio.

My goal is to make all the types of music I want to make with just this one keyboard (and MAYBE use FL Studio to export stuff to upload online)

So, yeah, which keyboard/workstation etc do you recommend for my needs?

My choice, among many of course, would be a Yamaha Montage 88, great synthesis engines, superb acoustic and electric pianos, plus sampling (sample bot is crazy, amazing) plus, it’s an audio interface, and has external audio inputs. If your budget is in that range, it’s a no brainier IMO.

Also check out Kurzweil, Roland, mainly as the workflow is different to YAMAHA & different synth engines. Do Nord have a workstation ? im not sure.

The Montage has AWM2 & 8op FM-X synth engines. For AWM2 you can download a sampled Rhodes piano and a Bossendorfer, which is nice.
The MODX+ has the same sounds as the Montage but a cut down front panel & different keybeds. Also plastic not metal but its 1/2 the price and considerably lighter.

7" touch screen is better for FM than the old 2x16 LCD !!!!!

I’d be tempted to record in your DAW and then edit the score there, exporting midi from FL Studio to notation software if a score page isn’t available.

It sounds as if a MIDI controller keyboard may be what you need. You have a computer running FL Studio, and using that for your sounds would give access to a huge range of software options, many more than being "stuck" with what one particular workstation keyboard would provide.

You don't say if you are a piano player. If you are, something like an Arturia KeyLab 88 would work well. If you are not, then there are options with lighter, less piano-like keyboards which you may find easier to play.
