vst\vsti that can play a midi file

Post by jambo7 tzq »

Hi
I need a vst\vsti that can play a midi file with many channels,
Instead of running daw and navigating each channel individually to vst.
Thanks

If you are running Windows, then adding a GM SoundFont (.SF2) file to VLC (and playing your midi files with VLC) is a simple solution.

To do this, download something like FluidR3_GM.sf2, and add it to VLC's codecs.

Though I believe soundfonts don't respond to a lot of MIDI expression messages, so you may not get the full sonic experience depending on the MIDI file used.

A quick web search shows some people using Halion Sonic SE as a stand alone MIDI file player. It's free.

There’s TTS-1 in Cakewalk, 16 channels (from memory) you can assign to different instruments in one instance. I think ch 10 was reserved for percussion. Your DAW might have something similar hidden away?

I’m pretty sure that any DAW has its own GM MIDI sound player that will be open up automatically if you drag in a GM MIDI file. It won’t sound very good, but you will have automatically created the MIDI tracks it contains and you can hear what the basic file sounds like before you decide to replace each track’s link to the GM player with a link to a better sounding VSTi.

You’ll have to do some set-up work eventually if you want decent results.

The OP didn't want to run a DAW.

The OP's post can be read two ways on that. It's not 100% clear. But they now have options on both.
