Ryzen 5700X vs 3900 2023

Post by Phunky »

I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU(R5 3600), but I'm not quite sure what the best option is right now. I've got a B450(AM4) motherboard, and the 5700x and the 3900(OEM) both cost around 200 euro here(DK).

My system is WIN10/Cubase 12.

Any recommendations would be most appreciated.

It is interesting how things change. Back in the day I would not have considered anything but Intel for running Cubase, but now it seems AMD are equal to the task of running Cubase (and other DAWs) and can easily match Intel and seems in some cases, can beat Intel!

I upgraded from a 2700x to a 5700x plus swapped out the 3200 memory for 3600, though my motherboard is a X470. Amazingly, I didn't have to reinstall Win 10! YMMV, depending on your BIOS.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

Didn't know that I might have to reinstall Windows. Having to reinstall everything is quite a hassle.
Maybe I should reconsider?. But doubling the CPU power(3900) for just 200 euro seems rather attractive.

It's very unlikely that you will need to reinstall the O/S after a CPU upgrade.

I would take the 5 series chip due to the higher single core performance.
That tends to be the bottleneck for real time software such as music production and gaming.

This review of the 5700x also shows data for the 3900x, but not the non x version:

If it's working well for you, maybe you just have a bit 'o GAS? Audio is pretty lightweight.
I use this particular machine for gaming and video production, so the leap plus a new video card made sense for me. TBH, re installation would have been a huge deal, I'm glad it wasn't necessary!

I'm starting to think that it might to much hassle for too small a gain.
My thinking was that a 3900(twice the cores, same generation) would be twice the horse power, but the gains, if I look at the charts, seems to be quite limited.
