Ideal humidity conditions for tube microphone

Post by dominic13 »

Hey guys,

I recently got a dry box / locker for my tube mic.
I’m unsure as to what percent the humidity should be for the mic.
Right now it’s 35-40%, so I’m wondering if that’s a bit too dry. Any ideal number?

Probably above 20%RH to avoid static problems and less than 75%RH to avoid any risk of condensation occurring. But static isn’t an issue for storage per se, only if you then touch it when the %RH is very low and your body has built up a static charge.

Unless you have a known-quality calibrated high-accuracy %RH meter, I’d be wary of any digital meter being any more accurate than +/-10%RH, and the analog dial types even worse. OK for indicating change but not great for telling you exactly when you might have a problem. And even good %RH sensors get pretty inaccurate above 80%RH.

Reliably fallible.

Seems a bit pointless unless you're planning on recording inside the box too!
