Logic articulation sets (keyboard shortcuts?)

Post by MarkOne »

Is there a way to enter articulations when editing a MIDI part other than the articulation dropdown menu. maybe a keyboard shortcut setting or something?

The selecting a note and then dropping down the articulation is like glacially slow. surely there must be a better way!

I don't really use this, but from the manual (obvs the first place to look ;) ), did you try this?:

You can also view and change articulations using the Keyswitches view of the Smart Controls pane. In addition to getting a graphic view of the assigned keyswitches, you can use this view to enable or disable keyswitches, and change the octave and key where keyswitches are located.

Open Keyswitches view
In Logic Pro, do one of the following:
• In the Smart Controls pane, click the Keyswitches button.
If the articulations are spread over more than one octave of keys, click the mini keyboards above the keys to view different octaves of keyswitches.
• Use the Show/Hide Keyswitches key command.
If the Smart Controls pane is not already open, it will open to the Keyswitches pane.
Note: You can also open the Keyswitches pane in the Smart Controls as a floating window using the Show/Hide Keyswitches Window key command.
Enable or disable keyswitches
• In Logic Pro, click the “MIDI Remote” button in the top left of the Keyswitches view.
Change the octave used for keyswitches
• In Logic Pro, click the Octave Offset pop-up menu and choose an octave.
Switch articulations in the Keyswitches view
• In Logic Pro, click one of the keys that has an articulation assigned to it.

It looks like that works of you want to do real time keyswitching of the articulations. But if you already have a MIDI performance the key switches don't assign an articulation to a note in the piano roll.

Oh well, there goes my afternoon

Hmm - depending on what you need to do, perhaps there might be a faster way of adding keyswitches by recording key presses, and splitting out notes from the regions?

Or if the menu is the only way that makes sense for your workflow, I'd likely use Keyboard Maestro to set up specific key commands (or MIDI notes etc) to change to specific articulations in the menu - I often do a bunch of these kinds of workflow utilities in this way, which can save a huge amount of time and hand fatigue.

Are we talking about the manipulation tools in the grid edit window?

I only use three - the pointer, the pencil and the velocity. I have the pointer as my standard tool but keep needing to switch between the pencil and velocity for my secondary tool (on the Command key). Is there a way of assigning one of these to a third key (Control?)?

No, he's talking about the Articulation menu in the grid edit inspector.

You can have three tools available at once - one for the left mouse button, one for the right mouse button, and one for the command key. (I always use Logic set up like this).

Preftings -> General -> Editing -> Right mouse button [options]

If you don't have a right mouse button, get a mouse that has one - it's the 2020's after all..! ;)

Thanks. It does however mean that you loose the pop-up contextual menus.

I was also wondering how I then assigned a tool to a right click, but then I noticed a third option had appeared at the top of the window. Neat!

Nope, the contextual menus are still available via control-click, so you can still access those even when right click is assigned a tool.

To assign tools, you can also bring up the toolbox, and click a tool with your left or right button to assign the tool to either.
