Logic Autosampler - it’s pure magic!!

Post by IAA »

Welliveused autosampler occasionally, but recently I decided to sample some hardware and some of mysoft synths for a project I’m involved in. Once I’d got past the gainstaging and file location (I wanted to store samples externally not where they’re autosampled by default) it was an absolute breeze. I even dragged the aiff files straight into Kontact and voila a Kontact instrument.

I’ve made little progress on my musical project since I’m now sampling everything that makes sound…….

It's basically a mini version of Redmatica's Autosampler (which is also in Keymap Pro), while it strips out some of the advanced features of Autosampler, being self-contained in a plugin is really useful.

Recommended (Redmatica had the best sample development/creation tools by far, and they are still pretty advanced now, even the though the apps now longer work on modern machines). Many other Redmatica features are in Logic, including the file name tagging, and a lot of the new rebuilt Sampler...

I'm not a Logic user. Are there any tools to do something like this on Windows?

Yes - I'm not big on Windows software generally (and this is the Mac forum ;) ), but I know at least of this one:

I just have the Free Kotakt Player.
However samples can also be brought into Logic Sampler as an instrument : at 7mins

Yes, I like using Kontact because I wanted to create some multis with some of the samples. Either way it’s awesome. I think back to sampling with my Roland S330……

I have become a recent convert to autiosamper too!

I had the situation where FM8 appeared to be playing badly with my M1 Mac particularly in MainStage land. And this was one of my important sounds in our current set.

Not wanting the 'one of your plugins has caused MainStage to become unstable' (But we're not going to tell you which, looser!) error message to pop up in the middle of a gig, 15 minutest with autosampler and I had an esx sample set reday to go.

As you say... Magic!

Funnily enough the recent JP8 Roland cloud update did the same, just initiating the plugin caused multiple core peaks on my M1 Max. So I sampled my key patches and binned the JP8! I’ve had to draw the line at sampling samples….. :headbang:

Yes, the Roland Cloud ACB plugins have terrible performance on ARM, their engines just don't work well with it at all.

It’s understandable though… Poor old Roland have only had three years (probably 4, they certainly would have had early dev platforms) to sort out their code.

I noticed others are complaining too on the RC Forum. A response from Roland says,

“ My name is Jon and I work for Roland Cloud. We hear that some of the community is experiencing performance issues with the new updates. We have updates coming to fix these issues so thank you in advance for your patience!”

There you go……….

Hmm... don't hold your breath. In some cases, performance has got worse with the latest updates - this isn't necessarily related to the M1 issue (which is largely because of the Apple silicon chips' handling of multicore code - several companies like Korg had to rework their multicore audio engines to fix this bad performance, I helped them test and investigate this, and it seems Roland haven't, or don't want to address this), as it seems people on other platforms also had these performance issues in this update, from my recall of recent forum threads on the issue (I'd have to go back and double-check to confirm).

So I would expect whatever happened in the recently released updates to get fixed, but not necessarily the underlying bad Arm native performance, unless they've got major engine updates in the works.

It's been a year or two now since the first Apple silicon native release, and while they made some modest improvements (it went from being unusable, to being horrendous but more or less playable without maxing out a core and distorting if you upped your buffer size to 256 or higher over that time), but it was never fixed properly.
