Can I feed Zoom H4n into PA system for live performance?

Post by notuno »

Hi all,
Tomorrow I'm doing a live performance with two acoustic instruments and the venue has only one microphone, which they tell me is only for speech and is not "panoramic".

I own a Zoom H4n. Can I use it as a microphone (well, two microphones in fact) and feed its output to their PA system? (I assume they have a small mixer). If so, do I need attenuators and are there latency issues? I need a very small latency or we will not be able to play.

Thanks.

I partially answer myself: the Zoom H4n has only a USB output. So I guess my only option is to feed this to a computer running some DAW and the computer to the PA.

Second question still stands: what latency to expect?

Umm, I don't think so.
The H4n also has an output via the headphone socket. I've just checked on mine and there's no noticeable latency to me, so that side of things won't be a problem.
Going via the USB and in and out of a laptop is likely to introduce noticeable latency I think.

But I would check exactly what you'd be plugging it into as that will determine what kind of cables you're going to need to make it all work.

They sound particularly unhelpful :madas: As Drew says you need to know what mixer, amps and speakers they have* (and we need to know too, in detail too if we are to give you any useful help.

* And also if they will actually allow you to use their system, I've known venues refuse to allow performers to plug anything into their rig.
