The ad pop-up issue is being investigated...

I'm told it's likely to be Google Ads changing the website ad-serving settings, which they do from time to time without telling anyone. It is being addressed today.

Sorry about this folks, we are as upset about them appearing as you. In the spare time we've had this week we've been unable to find the setting in Google Ad Manager that they must have changed to a new default, without telling us, but as soon as we can solve the riddle we will do so and try to get normal popup-free forum service restored.

Re: Ad appears when clicking thread title.
Just to provide some closure on this...
The pop-up ads were caused by Google running "an experiment" (without informing SOS or seeking permission).
They sent a letter after completing their "experiment" explaining:
They claim the "experiment" resulted in a revenue uplift of 154%, but —needless to say — these recommendations have not been accepted and the pop-ups have been disabled, as has a cunningly hidden option allowing Google to experiment in this way...
Hopefully, it won't happen again....

...Google run experiments on your traffic to find ways to improve your revenue or user experience and report the results of these experiments to you. Good news. The recent experiments below showed positive results, and therefore we suggest that you apply these changes to optimise your account going forward.
