Floor Tom Bleed In Kick Mic

Post by TS1 »

I am getting a ridiculous amount of floor tom bleed in the kick mic, which gets over the top after EQing and compressing. Kick mic is a D112 inside, with no reso, but a blanket over it.

It's mainly the resonant head. I generally like the reso head higher than the batter. I can't seem to find anything that works both for the tom and the kick, It's either gate the crap out of them, and/or put all kinds of muffling on the tom. I'd rather get a more natural sound. Nor have I found a better tuning.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Dynamic eq on the bass drum to remove tom sound adding to the bass drum when both are played simultaneously?

How much are the floor toms played? Is it just the occasional fill?

You haven't mentioned where inside the drum the microphone is positioned exactly. Have you played around with the position of your microphone at all? Angling it away from the floor tom a little may reduce spill. Also moving it closer to the batter head may focus more on the wanted sound, albeit the tone will change.

And how thick is the blanket? Assuming it's covering the bass drum, if one isn't enough how about trying two?

I suspect you have a lot of make-up gain on the compressor. That will make spill appear far worse than it really is.

The easiest solution would be a gate before the compressor. If you don't have one with a look-ahead function, duplicate the kick drum track, drag it a few milliseconds earlier, EQ as necessary to get a reliable trigger, and use that to open the gate fractionally in advance of kick beats.
