Jazz bass noiseless pickups advise again - sorry!

Post by skipper01 »

Hi, some time ago I put up a post regarding advice for noiseless pickups for a jazz style bass (sandberg Marlowe Dk) and got a lot of feedback that I appreciated and one way or another tried to take on board.
I ended up at the time getting some expensive Lindy Fralin noiseless which was a bit knee jerk.
I’m still in a quandary though but in a stronger slightly clearer position.
Basically, I sold the noiseless pickups as I just couldn’t seem to get on with them at the time (which again may have been a bit knee jerk for some reasons)…
Appreciating the subjectivity, I found them surprisingly more sonically different than I hoped to the single coils that I preferred.
Moreover, I personally felt with both the neck and bridge on to my ears it sounded pretty phasey. I could only realistically use the stock single coils this way to cancel the noise/hum and it didn’t sound phasey to me wired exactly the same!!!
Moreover, I was getting this weird metallic ringing on some notes although in hindsight I think may have been because the noiseless pickups were higher and nearer the strings.

However, I’ve still got this quandary where I simply cannot use the bass with the stock pickups on just the neck pickup alone which is such a shame as this is the sound I’d love to record.
I’ve tried all positions in the room and even downstairs and it’s just not feasible.

Ideally I’d rather not sell the bass cause of where I live as it’s so comfortable to play.
I also discovered in the process that the bass was not wired as factory given I bought it second hand.
I’ve put the wiring back to factory as I bought the factory pots and tone capacitor was given the schematic and it sounds even better now in my opinion.

So, I’m now wondering if I try a take 2 on some noiseless pickups given my experiences.
But can anybody advise again?
I appreciate there are many many products and it’s all potentially subjective.

I was just wondering about ie the dimarzio j series noiseless pickups that are split coil like the Lindy Fralins. I just can’t imagine they will be that different though??!?
Somebody suggested the Bill Wilde noiseless pickups and explained about the phase issues which at the time I didn’t fully understand.

Again, I appreciate its all subjective…

I can’t see anything obvious on the web a out phase issues on the Bill Wilde pickups, so I can only think that like a lot of pickups out there they are of opposite polarity to say Seymour Duncan or Fender. If so, it only matters if you are mixing different makes of pickups in the one guitar/bass and have mixed pickup positions. One pickup on its own is no problem.

It just means you have to swap some wires around and all is fine.

You only really have problems if all the pickups have single conductor + screen pickup wires as you need to rewire things at the pickup end, which isn’t for the fainthearted.

Reliably fallible.
