Method to mix difference aka "side"information into the sum aka "mid"information

Post by Carrottopped90 »

Hello,

Hope somebody can help me with this. i know there is DrMS that has this functionality, but i don't see how this requires a special processor to accomplish. unfortunately though, my searches have bore no fruit as i keep getting useless articles or videos about MID/SIDE EQ, compression etc. I understand the general concept of sum/difference processing, but most things that seemed obvious to me have not been able to get me the result i want

What result are you trying to get? If you add the side signal to the centre/mono you'll just get a slightly different mono balance, if you add both elements of the side signal it should make no difference as they will cancel out when summed to mono.

Still mourning the loss of my 'Jedi Poster" status :)

People often mistake me for a grown-up because of my age.

I'm not quite following what you're trying to achieve.
Have you got separate mid and sides tracks that you're wanting to combine to a stereo track? Or to combine them to a mono track?
Or have I misunderstood entirely? ;)

I think you’re referring to MS decoders, you increase the S level to get a wider stereo or reduce it for a narrower image, and at full attenuation you have just Mono.

When people say "I understand..." it almost always means they actually don't... but it's hard to tell because you haven't explained what you're trying to achieve.

The thread title says you're looking for a "Method to mix difference aka "side"information into the sum aka "mid"information".

However, if you add (mix) the Sides channel to the Mid channel (at equal levels) the result is the Left channel... as the standard MS matrix maths shows:

Left = M+S (and Right = M-S)

Presumably there's some element only in the sides that you want to introduce back into the mid to improve the mono sum balance?

Sadly, that's not really possible if you want to keep a stereo track. You really need to go back and remix to pan things more appropriately.

But if you can explain what you have and what you're trying to do we might be able to come up with a solution.

It sounds like it to me, but it's hard to follow.

If they're looking for an M/S decoder, try MSED by Voxengo (it's free). It will allow you to widen a stereo image (provided you use a stereo source). Also allows you to pan M/S separately.
