Finally, a good Rhodes sound

Post by Arpangel »

Well, this’ll do until I give in and get a real Rhodes, and that’s saying something.
An unlikely journey, it’s the "Classic Rhodes" in Garage Band, I’ve got it running on my laptop, no effects, dry.
I’m running the laptop through my mixer, with a TLA valve compressor on the the inserts, and a little bit of 224 reverb from the UA Golden, sounds great, exactly how I like it, it’s taken me ages to get this far, but I didn’t have a recent copy of Garage Band, it’s very underrated.

I can also vouch for 4Front Rhode x64 if you can still get that. Very simple. Rhodes emulators can get very complicated with all that Tine adjustment stuff some of them come with.

A real one would be the best thing ever, I agree, but have you seen the price of them now?

Coincidentally, I just wrote my first song in Garage Band, and I used the Rhodes. Turned out great!

Good isn’t it, but you have to fiddle with the velocity on the instrument to get it just right,

Funny you should mention a Rhodes. I was experimenting with that sort of sound recently.

I'd be interested to hear the sound you discovered and liked Tony

Easily, should think. I love 'em. Use them on everything as a skeleton for everything else to hang on. Two impossible wishes for me would be 1) A real Fender Rhodes, 2) The ability to play it, rather than use Midi all the time.

1) is out of the question now I think - and 2? My hands are very guitar shaped now - but I keep trying.

That’s good Eddy, but it’s got more tine and it’s a bit more "DX'y" than mine,
mine is basically the Garage Band "Classic Rhodes" with a few tweaks, don’t worry, it’ll be appearing on our stuff soon, or you can hear it next time you pop over!

I’m running into trouble, the output of my Behringer 202HD is very low, the output gain has to on maximum to get a healthy level into my little Mackie, this has always been an issue, I may have to get another interface.
The comp running Garage Band is using it.

I have found the Focusrite Scarlett to be an excellent sounding M1 Air interface with lots of output. Use it our live synth jams.

What exactly is a good Rhodes sound?
I've heard lots of therm - all significantly different. I don't think I've heard the real thing, although I might have unknowingly.

Exactly. There is no absolute "good Rhodes sound". A Rhodes can be tuned and setup for a very wide range of sound characters. What Tony thinks is a 'good Rhodes' will be a sound that some other player hates... And different Rhodes characters suit different styles of music, too.

...and didn't Tony come to the conclusion a few months ago that the "Rhodes sound" he was endlessly searching for was a Pianet all along?!

yeah, YAMAHA did a "Chick Corea mark V Rhodes" sample based sound pack for the Montage/MODX/MOTIF/etc. I think its a free download.
Any way, that aged Rhodes had been well maintained, tweaked & modified to CC's preference. Other Rhodes are available, as they say.

That’s because no one wanted to buy that pedal, after repeatedly advertising it at a silly low price.
So now I know it’s worthless, it makes it sound a hell of a lot better.

:)

Yes, I’m talking about "my" Rhodes, not anyone else’s.
Tea For Two, I’m guessing your Logic Rhodes is probably near to the standard Garage Band one I’m using.

yeah, a REAL Fender Rhodes sounds great.
When it overlaps in the very beginning, it's beautiful.
