Bought a new M1 Max Macbook Pro when they first arrived, and running the last version of Monterey 12.6.8.
All works well.
I mainly use Ableton Live 11, in Rosetta mode, as some plugs hadn't been updated, plus had some older free ones which I liked.
Also have Logic Pro X.
If I move up to MacOS Sonoma (which it keeps prompting me to), will I lose any plug ins? Do I have to jump over to M1 Silicon mode for everything?
And is there a way in the 'Get Info' to look at which plug ins would be compatible if I moved 'up' to the latest OS? and which ones would vanish (not compatible)?
I don't usually update, as if it aint broke, don't fix it, but as its still a powerful laptop I'd like to take advantage of the latest OS and also the latest Logic Pro 10.8 is Sonoma only I believe?
Just wanted to check before I dived in and upgraded.
Thanks
MacOS update to Sonoma?
Re: MacOS update to Sonoma?
This is a very useful tool which I used when I went through a similar process of trying to getting Ableton Live running natively.

Re: MacOS update to Sonoma?
Logic 10.8 requires Ventura 13.5 as a minimum, so Sonoma is not required to run it.
You'll have to check the compatibility of the software you use, but I use a lot, and I went from Monterey to Sonoma on an M1 Pro MBP, and it was the easiest, smoothest and best macOS upgrade I've done in a while. I didn't lose any plugins in the process. I only run natively though, on Logic.

^^^ This pretty much mirrors my experience too.
Re: MacOS update to Sonoma?
Thanks for your help.
So If I turn OFF Rosetta mode on my Ableton Live 11, on Monterey, and relaunch, I get some plug ins saying :
“certainplugin.vst3” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.
This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.
I wonder if this is Apple Silicon checking and showing the non-compatible plug ins in my list?
Therefore these would go (or need updating) if I upgraded the OS and fully went over to M1 Silicon ARM processing for Ableton, and of course Logic.

Re: MacOS update to Sonoma?
Remember, VST's plugins are a Steinberg proprietary plugin, not the system standard macOS AudioUnit format, so VSts are not going to have many of the benefits of AU plugins on the Mac platform. With AU's, I can run Logic natively, any natively plugins will also run natively, and any Intel plugins will run under Rosetta, and can still be seamlessly used in the same project.
You cannot do this with VST plugins. Note that Ableton *does* support AU plugins, and it also uses as far as I'm aware, the standard macOS way of running them, so you can mic and match native and Intel-only plugins in the same way (as it's macOS that provides the mechanism to do it).
Your VST plugin is being blocked by Gatekeeper, so it's probably not signed. You can allow it in Gatekeeper the same way as for anything else that macOS will claim looks suspicious, and then it should run. This has nothing to do with Apple silicon, or native vs Rosetta, this is the macOS Gatekeeper functionality.

Re: MacOS update to Sonoma?
Thanks muzines, and I did think that.
I wonder if I just need to unblock them in the very cautious Gatekeeper then.
I should point out that I do use the AUv2 plug ins probably 100% of the time, and never had any problems with them. It was my incorrect wording calling them VST's when I don't actually use the VST versions
So if I allow these past the over cautious gatekeeper and sign them in, maybe I should try the non-Rosetta version and see what gets through.
Alternatively I will also look at the tool(s) to check plug in compatibilty too.

Sure - if you get stuck, post back with details and I'll see if I can help...

Re: MacOS update to Sonoma?
What you could do, what I've done in fact, is use the Live 11 beta in Rosetta mode and the Live 11 release version in normal Apple Silicon mode. It's easy enough to install them separately and they have different icons in the dock.
Sonoma hasn't caused me any issues music-wise, although a couple of times I've booted up and it's had some kind of issue then rebooted. No actual impact on anything though.
